Mekapati Chandrashekhar Reddy
Mekapati Chandrasekhar Reddy (born 1954) is an Indian politician from Andhra Pradesh. He is a four-time MLA from Udayagiri Assembly Constituency in Nellore District. He won the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election representing YSR Congress Party but did not contest the 2024 Assembly election. Early life and education Reddy was born in Brahmanapalli, Marripaadu, Nellore district. His father M. Venku Reddy was a farmer. He completed his intermediate, the pre university course, from Jawahar Bharathi in Kavali in 1968. Career Reddy started his political career with Indian National Congress in 2004. He won the Udayagiri Assembly Constituency representing Congress Party in the 2004 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election defeating Kambam Vijayarami Reddy of Telugu Desam Party by a margin of 23,075 votes. A Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district (constituency) to the legislature of State government in the Indian system of government. From each constituency, the people elect one representative who then becomes a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). 2009 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election
The United Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election of 2009 took place in April 2009, concurrently with the 2009 Indian general election. The elections were held in the state in the first phase (2009-04-16) and the second phase (2009-04-23). The results were declared on 2009-05-16. The incumbent Indian National Congress retained power in the United Andhra Pradesh State Assembly lower house, though with a reduced majority. The Congress Legislature party re-elected incumbent Chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy as its leader thus re-nominating him to the post. Telugu Desam Party
The Telugu Desam Party (; TDP) is an Indian regional political party operating in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at the state and central level. Since its founding by N. T. Rama Rao (often referred to as NTR) on 29 March 1982, the party has focused on supporting Telugu speakers. Since 1995, NTR's son-in-law, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has led the party. The TDP currently holds three Lok Sabha seats, one Rajya Sabha seat, and is the main opposition party in both houses of Andhra Pradesh's legislature. Soon after its founding, the TDP won a majority in the 1983 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. 2012 Andhra Pradesh By-elections
Background Andhra Pradesh has had a turbulent last few years in politics with the movement for a separate Telangana gathering steam and the death of former Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash. Due to differences with the ruling INC, Reddy's son, Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, then broke away to form the YSRCP and was joined by several MLAs.
