Meier Steinbrink
Meier Steinbrink (February 28, 1880 – December 7, 1967) was a Jewish-American lawyer and judge from New York. Life Steinbrink was born on February 28, 1880 in New York City, New York, the son of Samuel Steinbrink and Fredricka Stern. His father ran a small candy store. Steinbrink attended the Public School No. 1 of Brooklyn, the Boys High School of Brooklyn, and the New York University School of Law. He was admitted to the bar in 1901 and began practicing law in Brooklyn. In 1911, the ''Brooklyn Standard Union'' picked him to expose and prosecute the WIllet judiciary scandal. In 1915, he was counsel for the Roman Catholic Church in wire-tapping cases. In 1917, he became a member of the District Board of Appeals in draft cases for New York City. Thomas Carmody (October 9, 1859 in Milo, Yates County, New York – January 22, 1922 in New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Life He graduated from Cornell Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 1886. He was District Attorney of Yates County from 1889 to 1893, and Chief Examiner of the State Civil Service Commission from 1893 to 1896. He was a delegate to the 1904 and 1912 Democratic National Conventions. He was New York Attorney General from 1911 to 1914, elected in 1910 and 1912. In 1913, he got involved in a controversy with zoo director William Temple Hornaday over the Federal Migratory Bird law which in Carmody's opinion was unconstitutional. In the United States, the Great Depression began with the Wall Street Crash of October 1929 and then spread worldwide. The nadir came in 1931–1933, and recovery came in 1940. The stock market crash marked the beginning of a decade of high unemployment, poverty, low profits, deflation, plunging farm incomes, and lost opportunities for economic growth as well as for personal advancement. Altogether, there was a general loss of confidence in the economic future. The usual explanations include numerous factors, especially high consumer debt, ill-regulated markets that permitted overoptimistic loans by banks and investors, and the lack of high-growth new industries. These all interacted to create a downward economic spiral of reduced spending, falling confidence and lowered production. The Supreme Court of the State of New York is the trial-level court of general jurisdiction in the New York State Unified Court System.
