Megasoid
Sixtoo was the main project of Canadian underground hip hop DJ, producer and rapper Vaughn Robert Squire between 1996 and 2007. He has since retired the Sixtoo name, and is pursuing other directions in electronic music, with a large genre shift from experimental hip hop to deeper club sounds of various tempos. He has also released music as Speakerbruiser Rob, and Prison Garde. History Sixtoo rose to prominence in the mid-1990s underground hip hop scene, initially as half of Halifax, Nova Scotia hip hop duo Sebutones, along with Buck 65. During that time, he worked with Sage Francis, Moka Only, Mr. Dibbs and other members of Anticon. In 2000, Sixtoo moved to Montreal where he signed on with UK-based record label Vertical Form. Soon after came the release of ''Antagonist Survival Kit'', a synth-based sample album that showcased both sides of his skills: on the mic and on the sampler. In 2003, Sixtoo signed to Ninja Tune. His debut album on the label, ''Chewing on Glass & Other ...

History Wolf Parade began in April 2003, when former Frog Eyes member Spencer Krug was offered a gig by Grenadine Records' Alex Megelas. With only a three-week deadline to form a band, Krug contacted a fellow Canadian guitarist Dan Boeckner (formerly of British Columbia band Atlas Strategic) and began writing songs in Krug's apartment. Initially using a drum machine for their rhythm section played through computer speakers, Krug later invited Arlen Thompson to the lineup as the drummer; however, the newly formed trio rehearsed as a full band only the day before their first show. During the tour, Wolf Parade re ...

Experimental Hip Hop
Progressive rap (or progressive hip hop) is a broad subgenre of hip hop music that aims to progress the genre thematically with socially transformative ideas and musically with stylistic experimentation. Developing through the works of innovative US hip hop acts during the 1980s and 1990s, it has also been known at various points as conscious, underground, and alternative hip hop. Progressive rap music critically examines social issues, political responsibility, and existential concerns, particularly in the context of African-American life and youth culture. Common themes include social injustice, inequality, status, identity, and religion, with discourses around ideologies such as Afrocentricity and Black religiosity. Unlike the genre's more commercially-dominant counterpart gangsta rap, prog-rap artists typically disavow intracultural violence and economic materialism in favor of constructive and educational responses such as consciousness, uplift, heritage, humor, and acti ...

Critical reception Jason MacNeil of AllMusic gave the album 3 stars out of 5, writing, "This album is a bizarre and challenging blend of effects, styles, and eerie feel that seeps into the listener early on." J-23 of ''HipHopDX'' gave the album a 6 out of 10, stating that "''Maid of Gold'' is pretty straight forward, plenty of hard-hitting, rigid drums surrounded by various dark and moody samples." He added, "Most of the tracks don't vary much as they play and the murky atmosphere remains consistent." Noel Dix of '' Exclaim!'' wrote, "Using quiet drum sequences and a lot of piano and live instrumentation, ''Maid of Gold'' is a very low-key affair and sometimes fails to grab your attention as it can be easy to nod off and let yourself become distracted as the beats could be drowned out by a ...

Jackals And Vipers In Envy Of Man
''Jackals and Vipers in Envy of Man'' is a studio album by Canadian hip hop artist Sixtoo. It was released on Ninja Tune in 2007. Critical reception Nate Patrin of ''Pitchfork'' gave the album a 5.5 out of 10, saying, "''Jackals and Vipers in Envy of Man'' is the kind of vague and incomplete music that, instead of immediately boring and/or frustrating you, has just enough intrigue to serve as what would seem to be reasonably unobtrusive background music." Noel Dix of '' Exclaim!'' said, "Sixtoo knows how to create moody landscapes and has managed to transfer them to his updated sound nicely." Jason Randall Smith of '' Impose'' described it as "a film score for the darker areas of life: long-standing regrets, ulterior motives, or the need to constantly look over your own shoulder." On July 30, 2007, the album was included on ''XLR8R''s "Office Top Ten Album Picks" list. Track listing Personnel Credits adapted from liner notes. * Sixtoo – production, editing, recording * Had ...

Damo Suzuki provided vocals on "Storm Clouds & Silver Linings". Critical reception John Bush of AllMusic gave the album 3 stars out of 5, saying, "Sixtoo's productions are dripping with atmosphere, and he possesses the fiending of a soundtracker for sounds that listeners haven't heard before but can immediately associate with a feeling -- and that feeling is usually a delicious sense of dread." Matthew Newton of ''XLR8R'' said: "Experimenting with acidic rock guitars and grimy basslines, Sixtoo reveals a new stylistic approach while retaining his signature murky sound." David Moore of ''Pitchfork'' gave the album a 7.8 out of 10, saying: "Where so many electronic artists demonstrate their 'legitimate' acoustic abilities with the insistence of a neglected studio musician, Sixtoo's development as live ...
