''Emmerdale'' is a British soap opera first broadcast on 16 October 1972. The following is a list of characters that first appeared during 2012, by order of first appearance. All characters were introduced by the soap's executive producer, Steve Frost. Ed Roberts made his debut appearance in February, followed by Declan Macey's half-sister, Megan shortly after, her son Robbie first appeared in May, while Kerry Wyatt arrived in July. Steve Harland, Vanessa Woodfield, Dominic Andrews and Gemma Andrews all made their debuts in December. There were three births in 2012, Jack Sugden, the son of Andy Sugden and Debbie Dingle and Molly Sharma, the daughter of Nikhil Sharma and Genesis Walker were born in October and Archie Breckle, the son of Jai Sharma and Rachel Breckle was born in December. ''Emmerdale'' (known as ''Emmerdale Farm'' until 1989) is a British soap opera that is broadcast on ITV1. The show is set in Emmerdale (known as Beckindale until 1994), a fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales. Created by Kevin Laffan, ''Emmerdale Farm'' was first broadcast on 16 October 1972. Interior scenes have been filmed at the Leeds Studios since its inception. Exterior scenes were first filmed in Arncliffe in Littondale, and the series may have taken its name from Amerdale, an ancient name of Littondale. Exterior scenes were later shot at Esholt, but are now shot at a purpose-built set on the Harewood estate. The programme is broadcast in every ITV region. The series originally aired during the afternoon and was intended to be a three-month television series. However, more episodes were ordered and transmitted during the daytime until 1978, when it was moved to an early-evening prime time slot in most regions. The following is a list of characters that first appeared in the British soap opera ''Emmerdale'' in 2011, by order of first appearance. All characters were introduced by the soap's executive producer, Steve Frost. Flynn Buchanan Flynn Buchanan, played by Ryan Prescott, made his first on-screen appearance on 31 January 2011. Flynn was introduced as a love interest for Aaron Livesy ( Danny Miller). The character and casting was announced in January 2011. Prescott landed the role of Flynn shortly after graduating from a performing arts degree. He began filming his first scenes in late November 2010. Prescott told ''The Champion'' that he had been recognised from being in ''Emmerdale''. Adam Barton is a fictional character from the ITV soap opera, ''Emmerdale'', portrayed by Adam Thomas. Thomas's character and role were announced alongside that of the Barton family in May 2009. Thomas called Adam "a family man". The character first appeared during the episode broadcast on 17 July 2009.
