The Meditation Singers was a Gospel music group formed by Ernestine Rundless in the late 1940s. The original members were Earnestine Rundless, DeLillian Mitchell, Marie Waters, and Waters sister, Deloreese Early, who is now known as Della Reese. Urban Contemporary Gospel
Urban/contemporary gospel is a modern subgenre of gospel music. Although the style developed gradually, early forms are generally dated to the 1970s, and the genre was well established by the end of the 1980s. The radio format is pitched primarily to African-Americans. Christian hip hop can be considered a subtype of this genre. Delloreese Patricia Early (July 6, 1931 – November 19, 2017), known professionally as Della Reese, was an American jazz and gospel singer, actress, and ordained minister whose career spanned seven decades. She began her long career as a singer, scoring a hit with her 1959 single "Don't You Know?". In the late 1960s she hosted her own talk show, ''Della'', which ran for 197 episodes. Laura Lee (born Laura Lee Newton; 9 March 1945 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American soul music, soul and gospel music, gospel singing, singer and songwriter, most successful in the 1960s and 1970s and influential for her gramophone record, records which discussed and celebrated women's experience. Career Lee was born in Chicago, but as a child moved to Detroit with her mother, Helen Bethel. The founder of a leading gospel group, Ernestine Rundless of Meditation Singers, The Meditation Singers was a trusted mentor. Featuring Della Reese, they were the first Detroit gospel group to perform with instrumental backing.
