Media In Greater Sudbury
This is a list of media outlets in the city of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. As the largest city in Northeastern Ontario, Greater Sudbury is the region's primary media centre. Due to the relatively small size of the region's individual media markets, most of the region is served at least partially by Sudbury-based media — CICI-TV produces almost all local programming on the CTV Northern Ontario system, and the CBC Radio stations CBCS-FM and CBON-FM broadcast to the entire region through extensive rebroadcaster networks. As well, many of the commercial radio stations in Northeastern Ontario's smaller cities simulcast programming produced by sister stations in Sudbury for at least a portion of their programming schedules, particularly in weekend and evening slots. Greater Sudbury
Sudbury, officially the City of Greater Sudbury is the largest city in Northern Ontario by population, with a population of 166,004 at the 2021 Canadian Census. By land area, it is the largest in Ontario and the List of the largest cities and towns in Canada by area, fifth largest in Canada. It is administratively a List of census divisions of Ontario#Single-tier municipalities, single-tier municipality and thus is not part of any district, county, or regional municipality. CHYC-FM
CHYC-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts at 98.9 FM in Sudbury, Ontario. It broadcasts a francophone hot adult contemporary format for the city's Franco-Ontarian community. It is owned by Le5 Communications, and branded as ''Le Loup 98.9''. CHYC and its sister stations CHYK-FM in Timmins and CHYQ-FM in West Nipissing are the only francophone commercial stations programmed entirely in Ontario. Active rock is a radio format used by many commercial radio stations across the United States and Canada. Active rock stations play a balance of new hard rock songs with valued classic rock favorites, normally with an emphasis on the harder edge of mainstream rock and album-oriented rock. Bell Media Radio, G.P. (formerly CHUM Radio), operating as iHeartRadio Canada, is the radio broadcasting and music events subsidiary of Canadian media conglomerate Bell Media. The company has its origins in CHUM Limited, which was acquired by CTVglobemedia in 2006. Through subsequent acquisitions, it also subsumed the radio properties of Astral Media in 2013; many of these were former Standard Radio stations that were acquired by Astral in 2007. Country (also called country and western) is a genre of popular music that originated in the Southern and Southwestern United States in the early 1920s. CICS-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts at 91.7 FM in Sudbury, Ontario. The station airs a country format, branded as ''Pure Country 91.7''. The studio and offices are located at 699 Frood Road in Sudbury, and the station transmits a 50,000 watt signal from the CBC tower. History Originally owned by Larche Communications, the station was licensed by the CRTC on July 12, 2007. The format and ''KICX 91.7'' branding were patterned on Larche's existing CICZ-FM in Midland, although CICZ's format and brand were moved to sister station CICX-FM in Orillia before CICS was launched. Ici Musique (stylized as ICI Musique) is the French-language music radio service of Canada's national public broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (''Société Radio-Canada''). It is the French equivalent of the English CBC Music, although it has a different programming focus. CBBX-FM is a Canadian radio station. It broadcasts the Société Radio-Canada's ''Ici Musique'' network at 90.9 FM in Sudbury, Ontario. History The station was originally licensed by the CRTC in 1984. However, due to financial constraints at the CBC, the station was never launched, and the CBC was forced in 1991 to surrender all of its non-operating licenses. Some sources may incorrectly cite the station's call sign as CBOS-FM, the call sign that was assigned to the unlaunched 1984 license. The CBC subsequently applied for a new license, which was awarded in 2000.
