Medary is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the La Crosse, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The unincorporated community of Medary (formerly known as Winona Junction) is located in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.7 square miles (30.4 km2), of which, 11.7 square miles (30.3 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.17%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,463 people, 530 households, and 405 families residing in the town. The population density was 124.9 people per square mile (48.2/km2). There were 553 housing units at an average density of 47.2 per square mile (18.2/km2). Medary (community), Wisconsin
Medary (also Winona Junction) is an unincorporated community located in the town of Medary, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The Great River State Trail has its trailhead located here. History The La Crosse, Trempealeau & Prescott Railroad chartered to build from a point across the river from Winona, Minnesota to connect with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad. This rail junction originally was called Trempealeau Junction, but later became Winona Junction. The railroad was consolidated with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad June 6, 1877. The area was renamed in honor of Samuel Medary, an American politician. A community post office operated under the name Medary in 1895 until 1900. Medary is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Brookings County, South Dakota, Brookings County, South Dakota, United States. Founded in 1857 by the Dakota Land Company, it was one of the first towns in South Dakota. It is not tracked by the U.S. Census Bureau. History Early history The earliest signs of human activity found in the area date back to 1500 B.C., evidenced through ancient Stone tool, stone artifacts belonging to many different Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Native American peoples, as well as several burial mounds found in the area. Milton Bennett Medary
Milton Bennett Medary Jr. (February 6, 1874 – August 7, 1929) was an American architect from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, practicing with the firm Zantzinger, Borie and Medary from 1910 until his death. Biography Medary attended the University of Pennsylvania for one year before joining the Philadelphia architecture firm of Frank Miles Day in 1891. While at the university, he entered a student competition and designed, (with Frank Miles Day and William C. Hays), the 1894 student union, Houston Hall. Credit for this design, however, was given to a faculty member, Frank Miles Day with Medary listed as an associate architect. Medary remained with Frank Miles Day until 1894, when he founded his own firm in Philadelphia, Field & Medary. That firm would become Zantzinger, Borie & Medary in 1910. Samuel Medary
Samuel Medary (February 25, 1801 – November 7, 1864) was an American newspaper owner and politician. Biography Born and raised in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, he settled in Bethel, Ohio, in 1825. After a term in the Ohio House of Representatives (1834) and the Ohio State Senate (1836–38) as a Jackson Democrat, he purchased a newspaper in Columbus that became the ''Ohio Statesman'', which he edited until 1857. He was active at the National Democratic Conventions at Baltimore in 1844, where he was instrumental in the nomination of James K. Polk; and at Cincinnati in 1856, where he was the President pro tem. President James Buchanan appointed him as the third Territorial Governor of Minnesota from April 23, 1857, to May 24, 1858. Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858, and elected Henry Hastings Sibley as the state's first governor. Samuel Medary was also Governor of Kansas Territory from December 1858 to December 1860.
