Meanstreak (band)
Meanstreak is an American all-female thrash metal band from Westchester, New York, Westchester, New York (state), New York, United States. Active from 1985 to 1994, the band released only one album, ''Roadkill'', in 1988. According to Spirit of Metal, Meanstreak was one of the first all-female thrash metal bands in history. The band was founded by guitarists Marlene Apuzzo and Rena Sands. Bettina France joined as singer, Lisa Pace played bass guitar, and Diane Keyser was on drums. Keyser left the band shortly after ''Roadkill'' was recorded, and was replaced bYael who later went on to join My Ruin. Marlene Apuzzo, Rena Sands and Lisa Pace all married present or former members of the band Dream Theater. Sands, Pace and Apuzzo respectively wed guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung and former drummer Mike Portnoy. Heavy Metal Music
Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. With roots in blues rock, psychedelic rock and acid rock, heavy metal bands developed a thick, monumental sound characterized by distortion (music), distorted guitars, extended guitar solos, emphatic Beat (music), beats and loudness. Thrash Metal
Thrash metal (or simply thrash) is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its overall aggression and often fast tempo.Kahn-Harris, Keith, ''Extreme Metal: Music and Culture on the Edge'', pp. 2–3, 9. Power Metal
Power metal is a subgenre of heavy metal combining characteristics of traditional heavy metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context. Generally, power metal is characterized by a faster, lighter, and more uplifting sound, in contrast with the heaviness and dissonance prevalent, for example, in extreme metal. Power metal bands usually have anthem-like songs with fantasy-based subject matter and strong choruses, thus creating a theatrical, dramatic and emotionally "powerful" sound. Colin Larkin (writer)
Colin Larkin (born 1949) is a British writer and entrepreneur. He founded, and was the editor-in-chief of, the ''Encyclopedia of Popular Music'', described by ''The Times'' as "the standard against which all others must be judged". Along with the ten-volume encyclopedia, Larkin also wrote the book ''All Time Top 1000 Albums'', and edited the ''Guinness Who's Who of Jazz'', the ''Guinness Who's Who of Blues'', and the ''Virgin Encyclopedia Of Heavy Rock''. He has over 650,000 copies in print to date. Background and education Larkin was born in Dagenham, Essex. My Ruin
My Ruin is an American alternative metal band from Los Angeles, California, composed of the husband and wife duo Tairrie B and Mick Murphy (guitarist), Mick Murphy. The band has been through various line-up changes since its formation in 1999. The band's sound consists of passionate vocals and heavy rock beats, with most of the fanbase in the UK. Vocalist Tairrie B Murphy has cultivated a reputation both on and off the stage for her aggressive performances and acerbic vocal style. Over the decade since the band's formation, the sound has evolved and become heavier with each record, with Mick Murphy's guitar playing becoming a prominent feature along with his solos and riffs. Dream Theater
Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. They subsequently dropped out of their studies to concentrate further on the band that would eventually become Dream Theater.
