Mealsgate
Mealsgate is a village in Cumbria, England, historically within Cumberland. Location Mealsgate is situated on the old Roman Road between Carlisle and the Roman fort of Derventio at Papcastle . This road is now known as the A595. Mealsgate is situated from the market town of Wigton, from the border city of Carlisle, from Keswick and from the town of Cockermouth. Mealsgate is situated on edge of the Lake District National Park. Railway Connection Mealsgate was a stop on the Bolton Loop of the Maryport and Carlisle Railway and served the pit at Fletchertown like other stops on the loop. Maryport And Carlisle Railway
The Maryport & Carlisle Railway (M&CR) was an English railway company formed in 1836 which built and operated a small but eventually highly profitable railway to connect Maryport and Carlisle in Cumbria, England. There were many small collieries in the area and efficient access to the harbour at Maryport was important. The western end, connecting the majority of the collieries to Maryport opened in 1840 and the line was completed throughout to Carlisle in 1845. The considerable resources of coal, and later iron ore, carried by the railway made it especially profitable, and this was redoubled at the height of the iron and steel processing industries around Workington. Branch lines were opened to connect further collieries. After 1918 the industries on which the line was dependent declined steeply, and the railway declined accordingly; the branch lines closed, but the original main line remains open and forms part of the Cumbrian Coast Line between Carlisle and Barrow in Furness. ... Baggrow
Baggrow is a small village situated north of the Lake District National Park in the English county of Cumbria, historically within Cumberland. In many parts of the village views of England's 4th highest peak Skiddaw, standing 931 metres (3053 ft) above sea level, can be seen to the south east, some away. Fletchertown
Fletchertown is a small village in the Allerdale borough of Cumbria, England. It was historically within Cumberland. The village was originally built to house workers in a nearby coal mine, since abandoned. The site of the mine and its spoil heaps remain. The heaps are known locally as the 'pit bank' area. Fletchertown is also the home of a number of industrial units. The school closed in 1984 and now serves as a local community centre. Anthony Salvin
Anthony Salvin (17 October 1799 – 17 December 1881) was an English architect. He gained a reputation as an expert on medieval buildings and applied this expertise to his new buildings and his restorations. He restored castles and country houses, and built a number of new houses and churches. Early life and training He was born in Sunderland Bridge, County Durham, as the only child of General Anthony Salvin, a soldier, and his second wife Elizabeth (Eliza) Mills. He was educated at Durham School and in 1820 became a pupil of John Paterson of Edinburgh while he was working on the restoration of Brancepeth Castle in County Durham. In 1821 Salvin moved to Finchley in north London. He had an introduction to Sir John Soane but did not enter his office. According to his nephew he entered the office of John Nash. Allerdale Borough Council
Allerdale is a non-metropolitan district of Cumbria, England, with borough status. Its council is based in Workington and the borough has a population of 93,492 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 96,422 at the 2011 Census. Mark Jenkinson
Mark Ian Jenkinson (born 28 January 1982) is a British Conservative Party politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Workington since 2019. Early life and career Jenkinson was born in Whitehaven and raised in Workington. He was educated at St Joseph's Catholic High School, Workington and Newton Rigg College, Penrith, where he pursued agricultural studies, before joining British Steel as an apprentice. Prior to becoming an MP, he worked as a self-employed contractor in the nuclear supply chain. Political career Jenkinson was the UK Independence Party candidate for Workington in 2015.
