McDuff, Texas
McDuff is a ghost town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The community was located eight miles southwest of Elgin, 12 miles northwest of Bastrop, and 25 miles east of Austin. It was on an old stage mail route from Bastrop to Austin. Today, the town site would correspond roughly with the intersection of Farm to Market Road 969 and Upper Elgin River Road. History The town was granted a post office in 1886, with James A. Wood as the first postmaster. The facility operated until 1906. During the 1890s, the community had a population of 30, a general store, and a saloon. A one-teacher school with 19 students was known to be operating in 1905. In 1907, when Bastrop County commissioners' court divided the county into school districts, a district school was located in McDuff. The school was merged with the Elgin Independent School District in 1949. During the 1940s, McDuff disappeared from county highway maps. Bastrop County is located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in Central Texas and its county seat is Bastrop. As of the 2020 census, the population was 97,216. Bastrop County is included in the Austin–Round Rock, Texas, metropolitan statistical area. History In 1834, the provincial legislature of Coahuila y Tejas – established by the Mexican Constitution of 1824 – met in Saltillo and established the Municipality and County of Mina consisting of parts of present-day Mason, Kimble, Llano, Burnet, Williamson, Gillespie, Blanco, Comal, Hays, Travis, Caldwell, Bastrop, Lee, Gonzales, Fayette, Washington and Lavaca Counties. Elgin ( ) is a city in Bastrop County in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 9,784 at the 2020 census. Elgin is also known as the Sausage Capital of Texas and the Brick Capital of the Southwest, due to the presence of three operating brickyards in the mid-20th century (two of which are still open). History In 1871, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad (succeeded by the Southern Pacific Transportation Company) built through the area and established a flag stop called Glasscock named for George W. Glasscock, a local resident and Republic of Texas soldier who lived in the area in the 1830s. Glasscock was renamed on August 18, 1872, for Robert Morris Elgin, the railroad's land commissioner, following the practice of naming new railroad towns after officers of the company. Bastrop () is a city and the county seat of Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,688 according to the 2020 census. It is located about southeast of Austin and is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Spanish soldiers lived temporarily at the current site of Bastrop as early as 1804, when a fort was established where the Old San Antonio Road crossed the Colorado River and named ''Puesta del Colorado''. Bastrop's namesake, Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop, was a commoner named Philip Hendrik Nering Bogel, who was wanted for embezzlement in his native country of the Netherlands. Farm to Market Road 969 (FM 969) is a farm-to-market road located in Travis and Bastrop counties in the U.S. state of Texas. Route description FM 969 begins at an intersection with Loop 111 (Airport Boulevard), east of Interstate 35. It proceeds east along MLK Boulevard for , passing by Morris Williams Golf Course and US 183 before leaving the Austin city limits. The route passes FM 973 south of Lake Walter E. Long and continues east and southeast for , passing through the villages of Utley and Webberville before terminating at an intersection with SH 71/ SH 21, just west of Bastrop.
