McDowell Award
The W. Wallace McDowell Award is awarded by the IEEE Computer Society for outstanding theoretical, design, educational, practical, or related innovative contributions that fall within the scope of Computer Society interest. This is the highest technical award made solely by the IEEE Computer Society where selection of the awardee is based on the "highest level of technical accomplishment and achievement". The IEEE Computer Society (with over 85000 members from every field of computing) is "dedicated to advancing the theory, practice, and application of computer and information processing technology." Another award considered to be the "most prestigious technical award in computing" is the A. M. Turing Award awarded by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Sidney Fernbach
Sidney Fernbach (1917, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - 1991) was an American physicist. Life Fernbach studied physics at Temple University and the University of California, Berkeley. He worked as a physicist in the USA. Starting in 1952, he worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California Radiation Laboratory using computers to research nuclear weapons. He was the originating editor of the book series ''Methods in Computational Physics'' and also of ''The Journal of Computational Physics''. Daniel Leonid Slotnick (1931–1985) was an American mathematician and Computer architecture, computer architect. Slotnick, in papers published with John Cocke (computer scientist), John Cocke in 1958, discussed the use of parallel computing, parallelism in numerical calculations for the first time. He later served as the chief architect of the ILLIAC IV supercomputer. . He was the principal investigator on a DARPA contract in the early 1970s that produced the ILLIAC IV and the ARPANET. Grace Murray Hopper
Grace Brewster Hopper (; December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy rear admiral. One of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, she was a pioneer of computer programming who invented one of the first linkers. Hopper was the first to devise the theory of machine-independent programming languages, and the FLOW-MATIC programming language she created using this theory was later extended to create COBOL, an early high-level programming language still in use today. Prior to joining the Navy, Hopper earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University and was a professor of mathematics at Vassar College. Hopper attempted to enlist in the Navy during World War II but was rejected because she was 34 years old. She instead joined the Navy Reserves.
