Donald Roy McAnn
USS ''McAnn'' (DE-179) is a retired built for the United States Navy during World War II. She served in the Atlantic Ocean and provided escort service against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. As ''Bauru'' she is preserved by the Brazilian Navy at Rio de Janeiro. Namesake Donald Roy McAnn was born on 23 June 1911 in Rochester, New York. He enlisted in the United States Navy on 16 August 1932. During the early months of World War II he served on as a gunner's mate first class. On 26 October 1942 U.S. carrier task forces fought a numerically superior Japanese force in the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. During the air battle, he took valuable photographs from an exposed position on the forward port .50 caliber gun mount. In addition he rendered assistance to the gun crew and displayed outstanding courage without regard for his own safety. While relieving one of the gunners, he was struck by an exploding bomb fragment and fatally wounded. He was buried at sea. H ... Aida McAnn Flemming
Aida Maud Boyer McAnn Flemming, (7 March 1896 – 25 January 1994) was a Canadian teacher, writer and animal welfare advocate. She founded the Kindness Club, a humane education organization for children between the ages of 5 and 13. She was the wife of Hugh John Flemming, who was Premier of New Brunswick from 8 October 1952 to 11 July 1960. Family and early life Her father was Charles Whitfield McAnn. Originally from Kent County, New Brunswick, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Michigan. After practising law in Moncton, Moncton, New Brunswick, he moved to Kaslo, Kaslo, British Columbia, with his wife, the former Ada Boyer. She died three months after their daughter Aida was born at the Boyer family home in Victoria Corner, New Brunswick, on 7 March 1896. Aida was her parents' only child. Eamon Mcann
Eamonn McCann (born 10 March 1943) is an Irish politician, journalist, political activist, and former councillor from Derry, Northern Ireland. McCann was a People Before Profit (PBP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 2016 to 2017. In 2019, he was elected to Derry City and Strabane District Council, remaining in the position until his resignation for health reasons in March 2021. Early life and education McCann was born and has lived most of his life in Derry. Raised Catholic, he attended St. Columb's College and is prominently featured in the documentary film, ''The Boys of St. Columb's''. He later attended Queen's University Belfast, where he was president of the Literary and Scientific Society, the university's debating society. Hamish MacCunn, ''né'' James MacCunn (22 March 18682 August 1916) was a Scottish composer, conductor and teacher. He was one of the first students of the newly-founded Royal College of Music in London, and quickly made a mark. As a composer he achieved early success with his orchestral piece ''The Land of the Mountain and the Flood'' (1887), and, later, his first opera, ''Jeanie Deans'' (1894). His subsequent compositions did not match those two successes, and although he continued to compose throughout his life, he became best known as a conductor and teacher. He held teaching appointments at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music. As a conductor MacCunn served as musical director to the Carl Rosa, Moody-Manners and D'Oyly Carte opera companies, and worked with Thomas Beecham in the latter's London opera seasons in 1910 and 1915 and on tour.
