McAlester House
The McAlester House is an historic house located at 14 East Smith Avenue in McAlester, Oklahoma. Description and history Named for its builder and first owner, the colorful J. J. McAlester, for whom McAlester was named, it began in 1870 as a four-room log house. At the time, it was located in Tobucksy County, Choctaw Nation, in the Indian Territory. J. J. McAlester later surrounded the log structure with a single-story house and also built a much larger two-story Queen Anne style house joined by a breezeway to the smaller structure. Its furnishings, many of which remain to this day, reflected the prosperity and position that the McAlester family enjoyed in the community. The building was renovated in 1960 by J. L. McAlester, grandson of J. J. McAlester. In 1980, McAlester House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there). The American style covers a wide range of picturesque buildings with "free Renaissance" (non-Gothic Revival) details, rather than being a specific formulaic style in its own right. Tobucksy County, Choctaw Nation
Tobucksy County was a political subdivision of the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory, prior to Oklahoma becoming a state. It was part of the Moshulatubbee District, or First District, one of three administrative super-regions. History The county was also spelled, variously, as Toboxy, Tobuxy and Tobaksi. Its name in Choctaw was ''Tobaksi Kaunti'', for the Choctaw word meaning “coal.” Coal was known to be present in the area at the county's creation and later became its chief industry, in a string of coal mines stretching from McAlester and Perryville eastward. Settlement was confined mostly to the valleys and lowlands, with farming and mining being the major activities.
