The following is the complete list of the mayors of the city of Rochester, New York. The powers of the mayor have varied over the years. When the city was incorporated in 1834, the mayor was appointed by the city council and had few responsibilities beyond presiding over council meetings. In 1840, the New York state legislature passed a law making the mayors of all incorporated cities elective. Various amendments to the city charter during the 19th century gave the mayor additional powers of appointment. In 1898, the state legislature adopted a uniform charter for all cities, establishing a mayor-council government where the mayor controlled all executive functions and appointments. In 1925, Rochester modified its charter in a referendum to switch to a council-manager government, where the mayor was ceremonial and executive functions were handled by a city manager appointed by the council. Malik D. Evans is an American politician and banker who is the 71st and current Mayor of Rochester, New York. A member of the Democratic Party, Evans previously served on the Rochester City Council as an at-large member and on the Rochester City School Board including several years as its president. Clarence Van Zandt
Clarence Duncan Van Zandt (March 21, 1853 – June 17, 1926) was an American businessman and politician who served as the 50th mayor of Rochester, New York from 1922 to 1926. Early life and career Van Zandt was born in 1853 in Rochester. After receiving an education in the public schools, he was hired as an errand boy for the Lane and Paine Drug Company. In 1881, he became a member of the firm. That same year, he married Mary E. White. When Lane and Paine was incorporated as the Paine Drug Company in 1910, Van Zandt became the company president, and was the principal owner until the time of his death. Mary Van Zandt died in 1917. Hiram Edgerton
Hiram Haskell Edgerton (April 19, 1847 – June 18, 1922) was an American businessman and politician who served as the 49th mayor of Rochester, New York from 1908 to 1921. Biography Early life Edgerton was born on April 19, 1847, in Belfast, New York. When he was 11 years old, his family moved to Rochester, where his father ran a lumber business and construction firm. In 1868, he married Medora L. DeWitt. The couple had two daughters. In 1880, he inherited the construction firm. Under his direction, the firm constructed several churches, government buildings, and commercial buildings like the Sibley's, Lindsay and Curr Building in Rochester. Abel Carter Wilder (March 18, 1828 – December 22, 1875) was a U.S. Representative from Kansas. Biography Born in Mendon, Massachusetts, Wilder completed preparatory studies and engaged in mercantile pursuits. He moved to Rochester, New York, and continued mercantile pursuits. He moved to Leavenworth, Kansas in 1857 and again engaged in mercantile pursuits. He served as delegate to the Osawatomie convention in 1859. He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860 and elected its chairman. He served as a captain in the Kansas brigade for one year in the Civil War.
