Mayor Of Nairobi
The Mayor of Nairobi was the non-executive head of Nairobi City Council in Nairobi, Kenya until the new constitution of 2010 which devolved government was enacted. The Mayor's office, officially the Mayor’s Palour, was located at City Hall Nairobi. The last mayor of Nairobi was George Aladwa of ODM, elected on 10 August 2011. There was no Mayor of Nairobi from 1983 to 1992 because the City Council of Nairobi was replaced by the City Commission appointed by then president Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. The City Council was restored after the multi-party elections of 1992. In the year 2013 the office of mayor ceased to exist since under the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 local governments were replaced by county governments. Nairobi City Council
The City Council of Nairobi was the local authority governing the city of Nairobi, Kenya. It was the largest of the 175 local Authorities in the country and was under direction of the Ministry of Local Government. The chief executive of the city council was the town clerk and was appointed by the Minister of Local Government. The non-executive branch of the council was headed by the mayor. The town clerk oversaw the functions of 17 main and 4 sub committees whose members were city councillors. Each committee is chaired by one councillor. The committees meet at scheduled meetings and adopt proposals by consensus. The proposals then pass through a full council for review. Proposals could only be approved as council resolutions by the Minister for Local Government having been reviewed by the full council. Charles Rubia
Charles Wanyoike Rubia (1923 – 23 December 2019) was the first native African mayor of Nairobi. He later joined Parliament, where he rose to the cabinet. In 1990, together with Hon. Kenneth Matiba, Rubia led the calls for multi-party democracy and was subsequently detained twice by President Daniel arap Moi. He was later released from detention after one year, and had been in poor health ever since. He was an MP from Starehe Constituency in Nairobi from 1969 to 1988. Dick Mwangi Wathika (20 October 1973 – 19 December 2015) was a Kenyan politician who served as mayor of Nairobi. He was elected in July 2004, and was re-elected in 2006. Margaret Kenyatta (mayor)
Margaret Wambui Kenyatta (16 February 1928 – 5 April 2017) was a Kenyan politician. She was the daughter of the first President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, and his wife Grace Wahu. She served as the Mayor of Nairobi from 1970 to 1976 and as Kenya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1976 to 1986. She was thereafter appointed as a Commissioner with the Electoral Commission of Kenya from 1992 to 2002. Israel Somen
Israel Somen (1903 – 9 October 1984), also known as Issy Somen, was a Jewish Kenyan politician businessman and diplomat. He was a one time Mayor of Nairobi and later Israel's Honorary Consul to Kenya. Biography Somen's family emigrated to Kenya in the early part of the twentieth century and was among those that established successful businesses in the country. The Somens owned the leading furniture store Hutchings Biemer as well as coffee and other interests. Somen, who was also a one time president of the Board of Kenya Jews, lived in Kenya for over 40 years. His wife Sophie Biemer was born in Kenya. He was elected mayor of Nairobi in 1955 together with deputy mayor Dobbs Johnson.
