Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough ( ) is a town on the southern bank of the River Tees in North Yorkshire, England. It is near the North York Moors national park. It is the namesake and main town of its local borough council area. Until the early 1800s, the area was rural farming land. By 1830, a new industrial town and port started to be developed, driven by the coal and later ironworks. Steel production and ship building began in the late 1800s, remaining associated with the town until post-industrial decline occurred in the late twentieth century. Trade (notably through ports) and digital enterprise sectors contemporarily contribute to the local economy, Teesside University and Middlesbrough College to local education. In 1853, it became a town. The motto ("We shall be" in Latin) was adopted, it reflects ("We have been") of the Bruce clan which were Cleveland's mediaeval lords. Andy Preston (businessman)
Andy Preston (born 31 July 1966) is an English politician, charity chairman, and businessman. He was elected Mayor of Middlesbrough in May 2019. He previously stood for the role of elected mayor of Middlesbrough in 2015. He was previously well known on Teesside as a high-profile philanthropist, having enjoyed a successful career in the town. Charity work After retiring from fund management, Preston moved back to the North of England. Between 2002 and 2008 Preston was a patron of international children's charity ARK. He was also chairman of charity Fairbridge Teesside from 2005 to 2010. The first charity he founded, in 2011, was Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation which raises and distributes funds to boost communities across the urban area of Teesside. Ray Mallon
Ray Mallon (born 1955) is a British politician who served as the independent Mayor of Middlesbrough from 2002 to 2015. Prior to his political career he served in the police until he resigned after pleading guilty to charges of misconduct. Early life Mallon was born to an undertaker and was raised as a Catholic. He left school at the age of sixteen with no qualifications. He played water polo internationally. Police career Mallon joined Cleveland Police in 1974. He was appointed detective chief inspector for Hartlepool in 1994. During his tenure in this role, crime fell in the area by 35%. He was promoted to detective superintendent in November 1996, and crime rates continued to fall. North Yorkshire is the largest ceremonial counties of England, ceremonial county (lieutenancy area) in England, covering an area of . Dave Budd (politician)
Christopher David Budd is a British politician. He served as the Mayor of Middlesbrough from 2015 until 2019. When elected, he became the second person to hold the post, having succeeded Ray Mallon. Middlesbrough Councillor Dave Budd was first elected as a Borough Councillor on Middlesbrough Council in 1991, representing Stainton and Thornton ward. From 1999 until his election as Mayor, Dave Budd represented the Borough's Ladgate Ward. Upon the election of Ray Mallon as the first Directly-Elected Mayor in 2002, Budd was appointed to the Mayor's Executive as Executive Member for Economic Regeneration and Culture.
