This is a list of mayors of Long Beach, California. The current mayor is Rex Richardson who has been in office since December 20, 2022. He is the first black person to hold the position. History Prior its creation, the equivalent to the office of mayor was referred to as the President of the Board of Trustees. The title of mayor was officially created in 1908, following the completion of the new city charter. Until 1988, the mayor was indirectly elected by the city council from amongst themselves. The first mayor to be directly elected was Ernie Kell in 1988. The flag of Long Beach, California, was adopted on July 5, 1967. It incorporates Long Beach, California, the city's seal, name, and motto on a gold, white, and blue field. The field is designed to be reminiscent of a beach. Thomas Joseph Clark, Jr. (July 13, 1926 – May 6, 2020) was an American politician. He served as mayor of Long Beach, California from 1975 to 1980 and from 1982 to 1984, as elected by the Long Beach City Council. Life and career Clark was born in San Diego and moved to Long Beach in 1933. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson Classical High School and an alumnus of Long Beach City College and the University of California at Berkeley. He was an optometrist. Robert Garcia (California Politician)
Robert Julio Garcia (born December 2, 1977) is an American educator and politician serving as the U.S. representative for California's 42nd congressional district since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 28th mayor of Long Beach, California from 2014 to 2022. Garcia was both the city's youngest and first elected openly LGBT mayor, as well as the first Latino to hold the office. He is the second person of color to be mayor of Long Beach, after Republican Eunice Sato, a Japanese-American who served from 1980 to 1982. Garcia is the first Peruvian-American to be elected to Congress, and is one of the first two fully Latino LGBT members of Congress (along with George Santos). Beverly Joy O'Neill (née Lewis; September 8, 1930) is an American politician. She served as mayor of Long Beach, California from 1994 to 2006. She is the only three-term citywide elected mayor of Long Beach, having won her third term as a write-in candidate because of Long Beach's term limits law preventing a two-term mayor from appearing on the ballot. Eunice Sato
Eunice Noda Sato (June 8, 1921 – February 12, 2021) was an American politician. She served as mayor of Long Beach, California from 1980 to 1982. As such she was the first Asian-American female mayor of a major American city, as well as the first female mayor of Long Beach. Life and career Sato was the daughter of Japanese parents Bunsaku and Sawa Maeda Noda. She attended Modesto Junior College, the University of Northern Colorado, and Columbia University, and became a teacher. She taught in Michigan and overseas in Yokohama, Japan. In 1950, she married Thomas Takahashi Sato. She moved to Long Beach in 1956. She was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 1975 and served until 1986. A member of the Democratic Party, Richardson was previously served as a member of the Long Beach City Council, representing the 9th District From 2014 until 2022. Early life and career Richardson was born on August 18, 1983, at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. His father was a member of the United States Air Force and his mother worked for General Motors as a welder on their assembly line.
