This is a list of the mayors of the Municipality of Leichhardt, a former local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The official title of Mayors while holding office was: His/Her Worship The Mayor of Leichhardt. First incorporated on 29 December 1871 as the ''Municipal District of Leichhardt'', the municipality commenced operations on 14 December 1871 and the election of the first Council was held on 6 February 1872. The first mayor was Alderman Frank Beames, elected at the first meeting of the council on 16 February 1872. From 1 January 1949, with the passing of the ''Local Government (Areas) Act 1948'', Leichhardt was reconstituted incorporating the former municipalities of Annandale and Balmain. His Worship
Worship is an honorific prefix for mayors, Justice of the Peace, justices of the peace and magistrates in present or former Commonwealth realms. In spoken address, these officials are addressed as Your Worship or referred to as His Worship, Her Worship, or Their Worship. John Young (building Contractor)
John Young (1827 – 27 February 1907) was an Australian bowler, builder, politician and alderman. Life and career Young was born in Foot's Cray, Kent, England and died in Annandale, Sydney, New South Wales. After moving to Victoria, Australia, in 1855, he had mixed results as a builder. He then moved to Sydney in 1866 and proceeded to make his mark. As a result, he is especially remembered as the builder of St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney (designed by William Wardell), and the Johnston Street group of houses in Annandale. The most outstanding house in the group was The Abbey, a sandstone, heritage-listed house in the Victorian Free Gothic style. (Sydney folklore has it that Young took gargoyles intended for St Mary's Cathedral and used them on The Abbey). Another outstanding house was Highroyd. Jamie Parker (politician)
Jamie Thomas Parker is the member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Balmain for the Greens since 2011. Parker was the first Green to represent his party in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Political career Parker has been active in social justice and environmental issues for many years and while at university was elected the NSW president and subsequently the national environment officer of the National Union of Students. Parker stood for and was elected to Leichhardt Council in 1999 as a NSW Greens member. Parker was subsequently re-elected in 2004 and 2008. While on Council he has served as chair of the Environment Committee, as deputy mayor and, since 2008, as the mayor of Leichhardt. He retired from Council at the 2012 election. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. Nick Origlass
Nick Origlass (13 January 1908 – 17 May 1996) was an Australian Trotskyist who served as mayor of Leichhardt in Sydney. Early life In 1932, Origlass joined the Communist Party of Australia (CPA), which was then aligned with Stalin's USSR. Expelled soon after, he became involved in the Trotskyist movement. He joined the Workers Party in 1934 and by 1937 was its leading figure. The Workers Party merged into the Communist League of Australia in 1938. Career In 1940, Origlass started working at Mort's Dock in Sydney's Balmain shipyards. He was elected as a shop steward with the Federated Ironworkers Association of Australia. ''Truth'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, Australia. It was founded in August 1890 by William Nicholas Willis and its first editor was Adolphus Taylor. In 1891 it claimed to be "The organ of radical democracy and Australian National Independence" and advocated "a republican Commonwealth created by the will of the whole people", but from its early days it was mainly a scandal sheet. The ''Illawarra Mercury'' is a daily newspaper serving the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Industrial Labor Party
The Industrial Labor Party or Heffron Labor Party was a short-lived but influential political party active in New South Wales between 1936 and 1939. It was a splinter group of the Labor Party (ALP) and was formed by Bob Heffron after he and Carlo Lazzarini attempted to depose the party leader Jack Lang (who had been Premier of New South Wales 1925-27 and again 1930-32). Both Heffron and Lazzarini subsequently lost their party endorsements for the 1938 election. At the 1938 election the ILP stood candidates in 6 of the 90 seats and won 3.7% of the popular vote. Heffron and Lazzarini retained their seats in the Legislative Assembly. The party was successful at two subsequent by-elections in the seats of Hurstville, won by Clive Evatt, and Waverley, won by Clarrie Martin. ''The Sun'' was an Australian afternoon tabloid newspaper, first published under that name in 1910. History ''The Sunday Sun'' was first published on 5 April 1903. In 1910 Hugh Denison founded Sun Newspaper Ltd and took over publication of the old and ailing and ''Australian Star'' and its sister ''Sunday Sun'', appointing Monty Grover as editor-in-chief. The ''Star'' became ''The Sun'', and the ''Sunday Sun'' became ''The Sun: Sunday edition'' on 11 December 1910.
