Gisborne District or the Gisborne Region (Māori: ''Te Tairāwhiti'' or ''Te Tai Rāwhiti'') is a local government area of northeastern New Zealand. It is governed by Gisborne District Council, a unitary authority (with the combined powers of a district and regional council). It is named after its largest settlement, the city of Gisborne. The region is also commonly referred to as the East Coast. The region is commonly divided into the East Cape and Poverty Bay. It is bounded by mountain ranges to the west, rugged country to the south, and faces east onto the Pacific Ocean. Name and history Prior to the late 19th century, the area was known as Tūranga. However, as the Gisborne town site was laid out in 1870, the name changed to Gisborne, after the Colonial Secretary William Gisborne, and to avoid confusion with the town of Tauranga. David Coleman (New Zealand Politician)
David William Coleman (1881 – 13 March 1951) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography Early life He was born in London in 1881, and lived as a child and young man in Queensland. He worked as a carpenter and later as a furniture salesman. He joined the local debating society and maintained an interest in the vocation for the rest of his life. In 1902, aged 21, he emigrated to New Zealand and first lived in Wellington, before moving to Gisborne where he established his own retail business. In 1904 he married Julia Jane Bigwood and had two children. Political career Coleman became secretary of the Poverty Bay Labourers' Union and then became secretary of the Gisborne branch of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Coleman supported the merger of the SDP into the New Zealand Labour Party and was on the Labour Party's first national executive, serving on it and the Gisborne LRC for twenty-one years. Meng Liu Foon (born ) is a New Zealand politician who served as the mayor of Gisborne from 2001 to 2019. Since August 2019, he has been New Zealand's race relations commissioner. He is one of a handful of people of Chinese descent to have become a mayor in New Zealand. He is fluent in English, Cantonese and Māori. At the time of his departure from the mayoral position he was the only mayor in New Zealand who was fluent in Māori. Childhood and education Meng Foon was born in August 1959 in Gisborne in New Zealand's North Island. His mother is Ng Heng Kiu (Helen) of Hong Kong and his father is Liu Sui Kai (George) of Guangzhou. Foon's parents were market gardeners who operated a vegetable shop in Gisborne. Richard Alexander "Tiny" White (11 June 1925 – 10 March 2012) was a New Zealand rugby union footballer. He played 23 tests and 55 games for the All Blacks. Early life Richard Alexander White was educated at Gisborne Boys' High School and Feilding Agricultural High School. It was at school that he earned the ironic nickname "Tiny". White was regarded as tall by 1940s standards. Rugby career Richard White played for Poverty Bay. He debuted for the All Blacks in 1949 by playing two tests against Australia and he immediately became an important player for them. He never missed a test match during his career and was only subbed off once in his career. White also played in thirty of the 36 games during the All Blacks 1953–54 New Zealand rugby union tour of Britain, Ireland, France and North America, the most of any player. Sir Harry Heaton Barker (18 July 1898 – 18 May 1994) was a New Zealand newspaper journalist and editor, and local politician. He was mayor of Gisborne for 27 years. Early life and family Barker was born in Nelson, New Zealand on 18 July 1898. His father, John Heaton Barker, was the founder of the Four Square supermarket chain. The family moved to Wellington in 1902 and Auckland in 1912. Barker spent his final school year at New Plymouth Boys' High School as a boarder. Barker enlisted for military service during World War I, initially falsifying his age until he was found out. He fell ill in the 1918 influenza pandemic. He came to Gisborne in 1920 to work as a reporter for '' The Gisborne Times'' (which, after a couple of mergers, became ''The Gisborne Herald'' in 1939).
