City Of Brussels
The City of Brussels (french: Ville de Bruxelles or alternatively ''Bruxelles-Ville'' ; nl, Stad Brussel or ''Brussel-Stad'') is the largest municipality and historical City centre, centre of the Brussels, Brussels-Capital Region, as well as the capital of the Flemish Region (from which it is List of capitals outside the territories they serve, separate) and Belgium. Guillaume-Hippolyte Van Volxem
Guillaume-Hippolyte Van Volxem (13 February 1791 – 17 April 1868) was a Belgian lawyer and liberal politician. As a graduate of the ''l’École de droit de Bruxelles'', he becomes a lawyer at the bar of Brussels. He began his political career in 1830, when he was designated as temporary member of the national congress. In the same year, he was elected as alderman in Brussels and he was re-elected in 1836. Later he became a member of the provincial council of the Brabant and a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives (1837–1845). After the death of Nicolas-Jean Rouppe in 1838, he became the second burgomaster of the Belgian capital since the country's independence in 1830, as the communal council designates himon 13 September 1838 to fulfill the functions of burgomaster of Brussels (1838–1841). Charles Buls or Karel Buls (13 October 1837 – 13 July 1914) was a Belgian politician and mayor of the City of Brussels. Early life Charles François Gommaire Buls was born in Brussels as the son of a goldsmith from the region of Mechelen. Buls received an artistic education, and spent a year in Paris, and nine months in Italy, studying fine arts. He also learned several languages including English, German, Italian and Latin, besides his mother tongue Dutch. He followed in his father's footsteps and worked as a goldsmith. In 1862 he became a Freemason in "Les vrais amis", and in 1871 joined "La libre pensée". At the same time, he was a member of "de Veldbloem" and "Vlamingen vooruit", two Flemish organisations of the Flemish movement. Together with his brother in law, Leo Van der Kindere, the later mayor of Uccle, he became a "flamingant". Jules Anspach
Baron Jules Victor Anspach (20 July 1829 – 19 May 1879) was a Belgian politician and mayor of the City of Brussels, best known for his renovations surrounding the covering of the river Senne (1867–1871). He is buried in Brussels Cemetery. Anspach was born in Brussels into a family of Calvinist Genevan origin. His father François (died 1858) served in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives. Jules Anspach studied law at the Free University of Brussels (now split into the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel) becoming a Doctor of Laws. As with many Liberals, Anspach was a Freemason. Like his father, Anspach was elected to the Chamber of Representatives. Anspach rose rapidly, replacing Fontainas as mayor of Brussels in 1863, aged only 34, holding the office until his death in 1879. André-Napoléon Fontainas
André-Napoléon Fontainas (23 December 1807 – 19 July 1863) was a Belgian liberal politician, alderman and mayor of the City of Brussels. Life Fontainas was born and died in Brussels. His father came from the Auvergne region in France, and settled in Brussels in 1796 and worked in the ''Amigo'' prison. André-Napoléon graduated as a lawyer at the State University of Louvain and started working at the bar of Brussels. He was elected to the city council in 1841 and was appointed as an alderman in 1846. In 1849 he became a member of the chamber of representatives, after which he gave up his legal practice. As a politician he worked on social issues, to alleviate slum conditions and to improve educational facilities. In 1860, as first alderman of Brussels, he was appointed burgomaster by King Leopold I of Belgium. André-Napoléon de Fontainas served only for 30 months, as he died on 19 July 1863, while in office.
