Colchester ( ) is a city in Essex, in the East of England. It had a population of 122,000 in 2011. The demonym is Colcestrian. Colchester occupies the site of Camulodunum, the first major city in Roman Britain and its first capital. Colchester therefore claims to be Britain's first city. Sir Robert Edward Russell (born 31 March 1946) is a former Liberal Democrat politician in the United Kingdom who was the Member of Parliament for Colchester from 1997 to 2015. He was first elected at the 1997 United Kingdom general election and won subsequent re-election in 2001, 2005 and 2010; he was defeated in 2015 United Kingdom general election by the Conservative candidate and Colchester MP Will Quince. Nathaniel Lawrence (July 11, 1761 – July 15, 1797) was an American lawyer and politician. Life He was the son of Thomas Lawrence (1733—1816; brother of Jonathan Lawrence) and Elizabeth (Fish) Lawrence. He attended Princeton College, but left to fight in the American Revolutionary War as a lieutenant. In 1788, he was a delegate to the New York State Convention which ratified the U.S. Constitution. He was Secretary to the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York from 1790 to 1794. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1791, 1792, 1795 and 1796. He was New York State Attorney General from 1792 to 1795. He was a member of the New York Society Library, which has records of books he borrowed in 1791 and 1792. Isaac Rebow
Sir Isaac Rebow (16551726) was a clothier and merchant who served as Member of Parliament for Colchester in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Early life Rebow was baptised in the Dutch Church in Colchester on 15 July 1655. His parents came from two prominent Colchester families with Flemish origins. His father was the clothier and merchant John Rebow, while his mother, Sarah, was the daughter of the wealthy Colchester bay-maker and merchant Francis Tayspill. John Rebow received a grant of arms in April 1685 and died in April 1699. Career Business Rebow had a wide range of business interests, which he appears to have conducted on a non-partisan basis despite his Whig political interests. He invested £3000 in the South Sea Company (enough to qualify him as a director), had a large shareholding in the East India Company, and exported over 10,000 pieces of silver to India between 1697 and 1700. Ralph Creffeild
Sir Ralph Creffeild (often incorrectly Creffield; Colchester, Essex, England, 1653 - Colchester, 22 June 1732) was an alderman and three times Mayor of Colchester. A significant landowner, he controlled extensive estates in and around the town. He came from a family of wealthy wool merchants, originally from Flanders, but at Chappel by 1348. His father, also Ralph, was himself mayor on four occasions. Born in 1653, he ran the family business in the High Street of Colchester, but moved to Ardleigh, where he remained for fifty years. Creffeild was knighted by Queen Anne in 1713, having presented her with an address of thanks from the town's Corporation on the conclusion of the peace of Utrecht earlier that year. In 1684 he married Rachel, daughter of George Tayspill; Rachel is now best remembered in Colchester for making a bequest to the poor of Trinity Parish. Richard Alfred Tills (1860–1937) was the fourth mayor of Cairns, Australia and the twelfth chairman when Cairns was classified as a borough, a member of the Barron Divisional Board, and president of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce. Alderman Mrs. Catherine Buchanan Alderton MBE, JP, CC (1869 – 9 November 1951), was a Cheshire-born British Liberal Party politician and suffragist. She was the first woman elected as Mayoress of Colchester. Background She was the daughter of the Reverend Thomas Robinson, minister of Lion Walk Congregational church from 1886 to 1902. Dame Catherine Reeve Hunt (''née'' Hawkins; 22 December 1854 – 18 October 1948) was an English politician and activist who was mayor of Colchester, Essex, in 1924–25. Hunt was born in 1854, the daughter of Charles Henry Hawkins, of Maitlands, Colchester and Sarah Jane, daughter of John Bawtree, of Abberton, Essex. Her father was mayor of Colchester four times (1848–49, 1865–66, 1870–71, 1871–72). She married Dr Edgar Atlee Hunt, her aunt's widower, in 1896. William Gurney Benham
Sir William Gurney Benham, FSA, FRHS (; 16 February 1859 – 13 May 1944) was a British newspaper editor, published author and three times Mayor of Colchester. Early life and family William Benham was born on 16 February 1859 to Edward Benham, a printer, and Mary Carr. He was educated at the Merchant Taylors' School until 1873 and then at Colchester Royal Grammar School, a school about which he has written, of whose old boys' society he was later President and which still has a building named after him. In 1904 he married Ethel Hervey Elwes and had three children: Edith Tayspill Benham (1905-1955), Hervey William Gurney Benham (1910-1987) and Maura Elwes Mary Benham (1912-1995).
