Mayhew, Indian Territory
Mayhew, Indian Territory, located two miles north of present-day Boswell, Oklahoma, was the seat of government of the Pushmataha District of the Choctaw Nation, in the Indian Territory. It was located in Jackson County, Choctaw Nation, the county seat of which was Pigeon Roost, south of present-day Boswell. It ceased its functions upon preparation for Oklahoma’s statehood in 1907, when the Choctaw Nation’s government and political subdivisions were dissolved. History Mayhew was founded in 1836 by Presbyterian missionaries to the Choctaw Indians. They named it for Mayhew Presbyterian Mission in Mississippi. From here they ministered to the Choctaws, providing schooling, medical aid, and other services. A United States Post Office was established at Mayhew, Indian Territory on February 5, 1845 and operated until September 30, 1902. The Mayhew Cabin (officially Mayhew Cabin & Historic Village, also known as John Brown's Cave), in Nebraska City, Nebraska, is the only Underground Railroad site in Nebraska officially recognized by the National Park Service. It is included among the sites of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Mount Mayhew () is a peak rising to in Taridin Ridge, between Pequod Glacier and Starbuck Glacier, in the Aristotle Mountains on the east side of Graham Land, Antarctica. Horton is a township in eastern Ontario, Canada, at the confluence of the Bonnechere River and the Ottawa River in Renfrew County. The Town of Renfrew was originally part of Horton Township. Communities The township comprises the communities of Castleford, Castleford Station, Cotieville, Fergusons Beach, Goshen, Lochwinnoch (partially), Mayhew and Thompson Hill. Mayhew, formerly known as The Mayhew Animal Home, is an animal welfare charity working to improve the lives of dogs, cats and to spread information about the issues concerning animal welfare. Mayhew's animal shelter, head office and Community Vet Clinic are based in Kensal Green, an area in north-west London. History Mayhew was established in 1886 as ''The Home for Starving and Deserted Cats''. In 1904, it was renamed The Mayhew Animal Home in honour of the first superintendent, Anne Mayhew.
