Ron Mayes
Ron Mayes (born 1946) is a New Zealand former rugby union player and coach, best known for coaching the United States national rugby union team from 1983 to 1987. Early life and career Mayes was born in New Zealand in 1946. He was capped in New Zealand's first division team until his early retirement and transition into coaching due to an injury at the age of 22. He came to the United States in 1972. Mayes became the head coach of the Old Blues Rugby Club in 1974 and won five National Club Championships. He left the club in 1983 to sign on as the head coach of the United States national rugby union team, a position that he held through the first Rugby World Cup in 1987. Mayes had previously served as the head coach of the Northern California Pelicans from 1976 to 1982 and the Pacific Coast Grizzlies from 1978 to 1982. The White Horse Tavern was constructed before 1673 and is believed to be the oldest tavern building in the United States."The Architectural Heritage of Newport, Rhode Island" - Page 433 by Antoinette Forrester Downing, Vincent Joseph Scully - 1967 It is located on the corner of Farewell and Marlborough streets in Newport, Rhode Island. History Francis Brinley, an English immigrant, constructed the original building on the site in 1652 on land obtained from his brother in law, William Coddington. Charles Thomas Sean Mayes (17 March 1945 – 12 July 1995) was a British pianist and writer. Born in Stone Allerton, Somerset, Mayes was schooled in Bristol. He won a place at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained a degree in philosophy. Mayes played in a rock and roll band called Fumble, which supported David Bowie on the Ziggy Stardust Tour in 1972. He made three albums with Fumble, and featured in the original cast of ''Elvis!'' at the Astoria Theatre. In 1978, Mayes played for Bowie on the Isolar II Tour, recorded and released on the live album ''Stage'', and on '' Lodger'', released in 1979. In 1983 he joined Tom Robinson for " War Baby" and further album tracks. He wrote a biography of Joan Armatrading and co-wrote a visual documentary about Kate Bush with Kevin Cann. Samuel Houston Mayes
Samuel Houston Mayes (May 11, 1845 – December 12, 1927) of Scots/English-Cherokee descent, was elected as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma), serving from 1895 to 1899. His maternal grandfather belonged to the Deer clan, and his father was allied with members of the Cherokee Treaty Party in the 1830s, such as the Adair men, Elias Boudinot, and Major Ridge. In the late nineteenth century, his older brother Joel B. Mayes was elected to two terms as Chief of the Cherokee. Born in Indian Territory, Mayes attended a Cherokee school, served with the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and become a cattle rancher before entering politics.
