The Maybach VL I was an Otto cycle V-12 engine, made from 1924 in Germany. The airship LZ 126 was powered by five VL I engines which emphasised reliability and low fuel consumption. Technical description The VL I was a V-12 liquid-cooled four-stroke Otto cycle engine, with individual grey cast iron cylinders, with a cylinder bore of , piston stroke of , and displacement of . The crankshaft was supported in roller-bearings and was fitted with a vibration damper for smooth operation. Maybach VL II
The Maybach VL II was a type of internal combustion engine built by the German company Maybach in the late 1920s and 1930s. It was an uprated development of the successful Maybach VL I, and like the VL I, was a 60° V-12 engine. Five of them powered the German airship '' Graf Zeppelin'', housed in separate nacelles. The engines developed and were of capacity. They could burn either Blau gas or petrol. The American USS ''Akron'' used eight of them, mounted internally, as did its sister ship ''Macon''. The engines were reversible, meaning different cams could be engaged allowing the engine crankshaft to run in either direction, enabling reverse thrust. Maybach (, ) is a German luxury car brand that exists today as a part of Mercedes-Benz. Maybach Mb IVa
The Maybach Mb IVa was a water-cooled aircraft and airship straight-six engine developed in Germany during World War I by '' Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH'', a subsidiary of Zeppelin. It was one of the world's first series-produced engines designed specifically for high-altitude use. It was quite different engine design than the previous Maybach Mb.IV, not just a simple modification. An Otto cycle is an idealized thermodynamic cycle that describes the functioning of a typical spark ignition piston engine. It is the thermodynamic cycle most commonly found in automobile engines. A four-stroke (also four-cycle) engine is an internal combustion (IC) engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes while turning the crankshaft. A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston along the cylinder, in either direction. The four separate strokes are termed: #Intake: Also known as induction or suction. The Otto engine was a large stationary single-cylinder internal combustion four-stroke engine designed by the German Nicolaus Otto. It was a low-RPM machine, and only fired every other stroke due to the Otto cycle, also designed by Otto.
