May You Be Held
''May You Be Held'' is the fourth studio album by Canadian-American metal band Sumac. The album was released on October 2, 2020 through Thrill Jockey, pushed back from its original release date of September 18. To promote the album, Sumac released the track "The Iron Chair" for online streaming in July 2020. Sumac asked Thrill Jockey to refrain from posting the album to the music streaming platform Spotify due to what the band referred to as CEO Daniel Ek's "pretty repugnant statements" made earlier in 2020 about artists not performing well on the site. ''May You Be Held'' was recorded over three years (2017–2019) and recorded at three different recordings studios, primarily in Washington state. Kurt Ballou ( Converge) who produced Sumac's ''What One Becomes'' (2016) and '' Love in Shadow'' (2018) returned to mix the album, while it was recorded by Matt Bayles ( Isis, Botch). Sumac (stylized as SUMAC) is an American/Canadian post-metal supergroup that formed in 2014. It features the Vancouver, British Columbia-based Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), Seattle, Washington-based Brian Cook (Russian Circles, ex-These Arms Are Snakes, ex- Botch) and Vashon, Washington-based Aaron Turner (Mamiffer, Old Man Gloom, ex-Isis). Sumac released its debut album '' The Deal'' through Profound Lore Records in 2015. History Musician Aaron Turner started working on new material that would eventually become Sumac with the intention of writing some of the heaviest music he had ever created. Botch (band)
Botch is an American mathcore band formed in 1993 in Tacoma, Washington. The band, featuring Brian Cook, Dave Knudson, Tim Latona and Dave Verellen, spent four years as a garage band and released several demos and EPs before signing to Hydra Head Records. Through the label, Botch released two studio albums: '' American Nervoso'' (1998) and '' We Are the Romans'' (1999). The group toured extensively and internationally in support of their albums with like-minded bands such as The Blood Brothers, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ink & Dagger and Jesuit. Botch struggled to write a third studio album, and in 2002 the group broke up due to tensions among the band members and creative differences. Hydra Head posthumously released an EP of songs the group had been working on before they split titled '' An Anthology of Dead Ends'' and a live album documenting their final show titled ''061502'' in 2006. Sumac ( or ), also spelled sumach, is any of about 35 species of flowering plants in the genus ''Rhus'' and related genera in the cashew family (Anacardiaceae). The site features reviews, interviews, information on latest metal releases and blog-like posts from the writers, most notably Vince Neilstein and Axl Rosenberg. History The site was founded in December 2006 by authors Ben Umanov and Matthew Goldenberg who use the pen names Vince Neilstein and Axl Rosenberg. Matt Colton (born 30 March 1975) is an English mastering engineer and member of the mastering group of the Music Producers Guild. He has mastered recordings for artists such as Muse, Coldplay, James Blake, George Michael, Hot Chip, Gary Numan, Peter Gabriel, Flume and Erasure. He began his mastering career as an engineer at Porky's Mastering in London, run by George 'Porky' Peckham in 1997 where he worked with a diverse range of artists from Aphex Twin's Rephlex Records to Kylie Minogue, and has also worked at Optimum Mastering, Alchemy Soho and AIR Studios where he cut the vinyl masters for Coldplay's ''Mylo Xyloto'', remastered George Michael's ''Faith'', and worked on the debut album by James Blake. Faith Coloccia
Faith Coloccia is an American artist and musician. She is most known as being the founding member and primary songwriter for the post-rock band Mamiffer. Coloccia has also been a member of Everlovely Lightningheart, Pyramids, House of Low Culture and Split Cranium. In 2009, she co-founded the independent record label SIGE Records with her husband Aaron Turner (Isis, Sumac). Aaron Turner
Aaron Turner (born November 5, 1977) is an American musician, singer, graphic artist, and founder of label Hydra Head Records. He is most widely known for his role as guitarist and vocalist for the post-metal bands SUMAC and Isis, while also participating in several other bands and projects such as Old Man Gloom, Lotus Eaters and Split Cranium, a collaboration with Jussi Lehtisalo of Finnish band Circle who toured with Isis in 2009. Raised in New Mexico, Turner moved to the Boston area, where he attended art school and formed Isis and Hydra Head. In June 2003, Turner moved operations of both the band and label to Los Angeles, California. Turner now resides in Vashon, WA which is also the base of operations for Hydra Head and his various other activities. Brian Cook (musician)
Brian Cook (born July 16, 1977) is an American bass guitarist currently in the bands Russian Circles and Sumac. He was also previously a full-time member of Botch, These Arms Are Snakes and Roy, and also a session musician for Mouth of the Architect. Cook is also a freelance journalist and has published a book titled ''The Second Chair is Meant for You''. He is openly gay. In August 2021, Cook released his first solo album titled ''We Left a Note with an Apology'' through Sargent House under the moniker Torment & Glory. The initial concept for the album dates back to the mid-2000's when he listened to Bruce Springsteen's 1982 studio album ''Nebraska'' on vinyl that was so covered in dust, the music was heavily distorted with occasional acoustic guitar music. Isis (sometimes stylized ISIS) was an American post-metal band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1997. The band borrowed from and helped to evolve the post-metal sound pioneered by bands such as Neurosis and Godflesh, characterized by lengthy songs focusing on repetition and evolution of structure.
