May W. Newburger (January 22, 1920 – August 30, 2012) was an American activist and politician who served as a member of the New York State Assembly from 1979 to 1986. Early life and education She was born May Wallace on January 22, 1920, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Augusta Wallace. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College, a Master of Arts from Columbia University, and a post-Master's Certificate from Adelphi University. Career She became active in social and women's rights organizations, and entered politics as a Democrat. She was a delegate to the 1972, 1984, 1988 and 2000 Democratic National Conventions. She was Legislative Director of the Assembly Committee on Higher Education in 1975 and 1976; and Associate Director of the Women's Center for Community Leadership at Hunter College in 1977.
