May 18 (film)
''May 18'' (; lit. "Splendid Holiday") is a South Korean film released in 2007. Synopsis The film is based on the Gwangju massacre on May 18, 1980. It occurred when General Chun Doo-hwan tried to eliminate any rebels by using military force. Min-woo (Kim Sang-kyung) leads a relatively peaceful life with his younger brother Jin-woo (Lee Joon-gi)—until the day the soldiers go on the rampage against the citizens. The citizens form a militia determined to protect their loved ones, and Min-woo finds himself in the middle of it all. One day something unexpected happens suddenly. Innocent citizens are assaulted and even killed by martial law army armed with guns and knives. A tear gas rolls into the theater and a college student jumps into the theater, followed by a soldier. When all the people who watched the movie came out, martial law soldiers beat up college students and beat everyone out of the theater. Kim Ji-hoon (director)
Kim Ji-hoon (born 1971), also spelled Kim Ji-hun, is a South Korean film director. Life and career Kim Ji-hoon was born in Daegu. After graduating from Hanyang University's Theater and Film Art Department, he worked as an assistant director on a number of films. He made his feature directorial debut in 2004 with the film ''Mokpo, Gangster's Paradise'', starring Cha In-pyo and Cho Jae-hyun. His 2007 film ''May 18 (film), May 18'', about the Gwangju Massacre of 1980 and which starred Kim Sang-kyung, Lee Yo-won and Lee Joon-gi, earned him the Best Director award at the 2008 Korea Movie Star Awards. He went on to direct ''Sector 7 (film), Sector 7'', a 2011 action/horror film about a sea monster which attacked oil platforms, with an ensemble cast led by Ha Ji-won and Ahn Sung-ki. Gwangju Uprising
The Gwangju Uprising was a popular uprising in the city of Gwangju, South Korea, from May 18 to May 27, 1980, which pitted local, armed citizens against soldiers and police of the South Korean government. The event is sometimes called 5·18 (May 18; ), in reference to the date the movement began. The uprising is also known as the Gwangju Democratization Struggle (), the Gwangju Massacre, the May 18 Democratic Uprising, or the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement (). The uprising began after local Chonnam University students who were demonstrating against the martial law government were fired upon, killed, raped, and beaten by government troops. Some Gwangju citizens took up arms, raiding local police stations and armouries, and were able to take control of large sections of the city before soldiers re-entered the city and put down the uprising. The Korean Film Awards was a South Korean film awards ceremony hosted by the broadcasting network MBC from 2002 to 2010. History Originally named the MBC Film Awards, the ceremony was first established in 2002. It was renamed the Korean Film Awards in 2003.
