The Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (German: ''Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung'') was founded in 1969 and is one of the 82 Max Planck Institutes of the Max Planck Society. It is located on a campus in Stuttgart, together with the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. Research focus Research at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research is focused on the physics and chemistry of condensed matter, including especially complex materials and nanoscale science. In both of these fields, electronic and ionic transport phenomena are of particular interest. Organization The institute currently has eight departments. Solid-state physics is the study of rigid matter, or solids, through methods such as quantum mechanics, crystallography, electromagnetism, and metallurgy. It is the largest branch of condensed matter physics. Solid-state physics studies how the large-scale properties of solid materials result from their atomic-scale properties. Hans-Joachim Queisser
Hans-Joachim Queisser (born 6 July 1931, Berlin, Germany) is a solid-state physicist. He is best known for co-authoring the 1961 work on solar cells that detailed what is today known as the Shockley–Queisser limit, which is now considered the key contribution in this field. Queisser's father was a mechanical engineer for Siemens. In 1928 he travelled to the United States to work on power plants and asked his fiancée to join him. She wanted to return to Germany, and Hans Joachim was born shortly after their return in 1931, in Berlin. Joachim Maier
Joachim Maier (born 5 May 1955) is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart (Germany) and heads the department of Physical Chemistry. Education and career Maier studied chemistry at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, made his Masters and PhD in Physical Chemistry there. He received his habilitation at the University of Tübingen. From 1988 to 1991 he was responsible for the activities on functional ceramics at the MPI for Metals Research in Stuttgart, and from 1988 to 1996 he taught defect chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Notwithstanding other prestigious offers, he decided in favor of the Max Planck Society. Bettina Valeska Lotsch (born 7 September 1977 in Frankenthal (Pfalz)) is a German chemist. She is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany. Klaus Kern
Klaus Kern (born 24 March 1960) is a German physical chemist. Kern received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in 2008. Biography Kern studied at the University of Bonn chemistry and physics, and received his Ph.D. in 1986. Research He worked first at the Jülich Research Centre (1986-1991) and at Bell Labs as visiting research fellow in 1988. He became professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 1991. Bernhard Keimer
Bernhard Keimer (born 24. August 1964 in Ratingen) is a German physicist and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research. His research group uses spectroscopic methods to explore quantum many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials and metal-oxide heterostructures. Life Keimer obtained his physics education at the Technical University of Munich and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1991. He spent a year as postdoctoral associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and seven years on the faculty of Princeton University, where he was appointed Full Professor in 1997. Quantum materials is an umbrella term in condensed matter physics that encompasses all materials whose essential properties cannot be described in terms of semiclassical particles and low-level quantum mechanics.
