Max Bell Centre (Calgary)
Max Bell Centre (commonly Max Bell Arena) is an ice hockey arena in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in the community of Radisson Heights. It seats 2,121 for hockey, with a standing room capacity of over 3,000. It is named after Max Bell, a philanthropist who was a prominent businessman in Calgary. It hosted curling and short-track speed skating events at the 1988 Winter Olympics, both demonstration events. Presently, the arena is home to the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the primary facility for the Northeast Calgary Athletic Association's minor hockey teams. The arena also hosts Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League games. Late December, it serves as the primary venue for the Mac's AAA midget hockey tournament. For the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, a total of nine sports venues were used. Calgary tried twice to host the Winter Olympics in the 1960s without success before finally winning the 1988 Winter Games in 1981. Stampede Corral was built in 1950 while McMahon Stadium was built in 1960. When the National Hockey League (NHL) Flames franchise was relocated from Atlanta, Georgia in the United States during the summer of 1980, a new arena was needed. The Saddledome construction was underway in late 1981 when Calgary was awarded the 1988 Games. Completed in 1983, the Olympic (Scotiabank since October 2010) Saddledome has played host to the Flames ever since, including three Stanley Cup Finals (championship in 1989) and the NHL All-Star Game in 1985. The Midget AAA World Invitational Tournament (branded as the Circle K Classic for sponsorship reasons) is an international ice hockey tournament held annually for U18 ( formerly named midget-level) players in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. First held in 1978, as the CP Challenge Cup, the tournament features 25 male teams from across Canada, the United States and Europe. The Circle K Classic Tournament begins on December 26 ( Boxing Day) and concludes with the championship game on January 1 ( New Year's Day). Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League
The Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL) is a box lacrosse league based in Alberta with three teams in Saskatchewan and, as of 2018, one in Manitoba. It is sanctioned by the Alberta Lacrosse Association. RMLL organizes all senior and junior play in the province. The league is broken into several divisions: Senior B, Senior C, Junior A, Junior B, Tier II and Tier III. Junior Ladies and Senior Ladies divisions were added in 2004 and 2011, respectively. The RMLL is experiencing rapid growth as the popularity of box lacrosse increases, spurred on by the expansion of the National Lacrosse League to Calgary in 2001 and Edmonton in 2005.
