Mauro Diniz
Mauro Diniz (born 1952) is a Brazilian professional cavaquinist. He also has a career as a songwriter and singer. Biography Born in 1952 in one of the most traditional neighborhoods of carioca samba, Oswaldo Cruz, at the age of 4 he stayed between his father's legs, stunning everyone with his ability on the first cavaquinho chords. At the age of 8, besides having written a parody for one of his father's sambas, for the samba-enredo of the Bloco da Alegria carnival block, he was presented with a guitar by his mother Thereza, ''pastora'' of the samba school Portela. Therefore, Mauro Diniz made his first steps towards music guided by the Old Guard of Portela. The cavaquinho (pronounced in Portuguese) is a small Portuguese string instrument in the European guitar family, with four wires or gut strings. More broadly, ''cavaquinho'' is the name of a four-stringed subdivision of the lute family of instruments. A cavaquinho player is called a ''cavaquista''. Wilson Moreira (12 December 1936 – 6 September 2018) was a Brazilian '' sambista''. Biography Moreira was born in the neighborhood of Realengo, in Rio de Janeiro. As a teenager he was associated with the samba school Mocidade, where he won two samba-enredo contests in 1962 and 1963. In 1968, Wilson became affiliated to samba school Portela. Wilson had a prolific partnership with sambista Nei Lopes. One of their greatest hits was the song "Senhora Liberdade", which became an anthem in the Brazilian ''Diretas'' movement for the institution of direct national elections in the 1980s. Some other famous songs from the duo are "Gotas de Veneno", "Sandália Amarela" and the non-samba "Candongueiro", which brings forward their African roots, with other successes as, e.g., "Meu Apelo", being signed by Wilson alone. Jorge Aragão (, (b. March 1, 1949 in Rio de Janeiro), birth name Jorge Aragão da Cruz) is a Brazilian musician, singer/songwriter, working in the genres of samba and pagode. He is a multi-instrumentalist, and plays the guitar, ''surdo'', ''cavaco'' and banjo, among other instruments. In performance, he usually plays the ''cavaquinho'' most of the show, and sometimes the banjo. Biography Aragão started his career in the '70s as a ''sambista'' at balls and in nightclubs. Almir de Souza Serra (12 July 1946 – 5 May 2017), better known by his stage name Almir Guineto, was a Brazilian sambista, singer and songwriter and instrumentalist, working in the genres of samba and pagode. Biography Guineto was director of the samba school Salgueiro, a founder of the Fundo de Quintal samba group, and integrated the Originais do Samba group for 10 years before leaving for a solo career. Born on the Salgueiro hills in Rio de Janeiro in a family of musicians, he is credited as the man who introduced the banjo to samba, and is recognized as one of the main fathers of pagode. Guineto first knew success when his partido "Mordomia" won the first prize in the 1981 MPB-Shell festival.
