Maurizio Damilano
Maurizio Damilano (born 6 April 1957 in Scarnafigi, Italy) is an Italian former race walking, race walker. He won 15 individual medals (22 also with team events), at senior (athletics), senior level, at the International athletics championships and games, International athletics competitions. Biography He was the Athletics at the 1980 Summer Olympics, 1980 Olympic Champion and the 1987 World Championships in Athletics, 1987 and 1991 World Championships in Athletics, 1991 World Champion in the 20 km race walk. He has 60 caps in Italy national athletics team, national team from 1977 to 1992. Damilano is also the world record holder of the racewalking, 30 km race walk with the time of 2:01:44.1, achieved in Cuneo in 1992. Athletics At The 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's 20 Kilometres Walk
The Men's 20 km Race Walk at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, USSR had an entry list of 34 competitors. Seven athletes were disqualified and two did not finish in the final, which was held on Thursday, 24 July 1980. The race occurred on a very hot and humid day in the Grand Arena of Central Lenin Stadium. The defending champion of the Montreal summer games, Daniel Bautista of Mexico, led along with Soviet Anatoly Solomin for the majority of the race. However, Bautista was disqualified less than two kilometres from the finish and Solomin a few 100 metres later. There were a total of 136 caution flags and seven disqualifications during the course of the race. In what was considered a major upset, Maurizio Damilano of Italy won the gold with a finishing time of 1-23:35.5, over a minute faster than silver medalist Pyotr Pochinchuk of Belarus, competing for the USSR. The 3rd World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan between August 23 and September 1. 1517 athletes from 167 countries participated in the event. Japan hosted again the championship in 2007 in Osaka and Tokyo will host again the event in 2025 at the same venue.
