Abdias Maurel
Abdias Maurel (before 170222 April 1705), Camisard leader, who became a cavalry officer in the French army and gained distinction in Italy. Biography In Italy he served under Nicolas Catinat, Marshal Catinat, and on this account he himself is sometimes known as ''Catinat''. In 1702, when the revolt in the Cévennes broke out, he became one of the Camisard leaders, and in this capacity his name was soon known and feared. He refused to accept the peace made by Jean Cavalier in 1704, and after passing a few weeks in Switzerland he returned to France and became one of the chiefs of those Camisards who were still in arms. He was deeply involved in a plot to capture some French towns, a scheme which, it was hoped, would be helped by England and the Dutch Republic. But it failed; Maurel was betrayed, and with three other leaders of the movement was burned to death at Nîmes on 22 April 1705. Patrice Maurel (born 16 October 1978) is a French former football midfielder. Career Born in Cayenne, Maurel played professional football for Toulouse FC, FC Rouen, FC Istres and FC Gueugnon. He finished his career playing amateur football with US Colomiers Football and Montauban FCTG. After winning the 1997 UEFA European Under-18 Championship with France, Maurel never managed to break into Toulouse's first team, and went on loan to Ipswich Town F.C. at age 21. Victor Maurel (17 June 184822 October 1923) was a French operatic baritone who enjoyed an international reputation as a great singing actor. Biography Maurel was born in Marseille. Educated in music and stagecraft at the Paris Conservatory, he made his debut in opera in 1867, in the city of his birth. The following year, he performed on stage in Paris for the first time. New York first heard him in 1873, when he performed at the Academy of Music. Later, he would sing at New York's Metropolitan Opera (in 1894-96 and 1898–99). Other famous venues at which he appeared included London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden — in 1873–79, 1891–95 and 1904 — and the Paris Opera, where he was on the roster of singers from 1879 to 1894.
