Maureen Freely
Maureen Deidre Freely Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, FRSL (born July 1952) is an American journalist, novelist, professor, and translator. She has worked on the Warwick Writing Programme since 1996. Biography Born in Neptune Township, New Jersey, Neptune, New Jersey, she is the daughter of author John Freely, and has a brother, Brendan. Maureen Freely grew up in Turkey. She graduated from Harvard College. She now lives in England. She is the mother of four children and two step-children. She was married to Paul Spike, with whom she had a son and a daughter. Freely is an atheist. Work Freely lectures at the University of Warwick and is an occasional contributor to ''The Guardian'' and ''The Independent'' newspapers. She is the current president of English PEN, the founding centre of PEN International. Among her novels is ''The Life of the Party'', set in Turkey. Sait Faik Abasıyanık (18 November 1906 – 11 May 1954) was one of the greatest Turkish writers of short stories and poetry and considered an important literary figure of the 1940s. He created a brand new style in Turkish literature and brought new life to Turkish short story writing with his harsh but humanistic portrayals of labourers, fishermen, children, the unemployed, and the poor. ''The Time Regulation Institute'' ( tr, Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü) is a novel by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar. It began serialization in a newspaper in 1954. It was first published as a book in 1961. Yapı Kredi Yayınları republished the novel in 1999 as part of a campaign to publish various novels by Tanpınar in book form. Selim Kuru of the University of Washington wrote that the 1999 version was "poorly edited".Kuru, p. 258. An English translation by Ender Gürol was published in 2001 by the Turco-Tatar Press. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (23 June 1901 – 24 January 1962) was a Turkish poet, novelist, literary scholar and essayist, widely regarded as one of the most important representatives of modernism in Turkish literature. In addition to his literary and academic career, Tanpınar was also a member of the Turkish Parliament between 1944 and 1946. Sabahattin Ali (25 February 1907 – 2 April 1948) was a Turkish novelist, short-story writer, poet, and journalist. Early life He was born in 1907 in Eğridere township (now Ardino in southern Bulgaria) of the Sanjak of Gümülcine (now Komotini in northern Greece), in the Ottoman Empire. His father was an Ottoman officer, Selahattin Ali, and his mother Husniye. His father's family was from the Black Sea region. Fethiye Çetin () (born 4 May 1950 in Maden, Elazığ Province) is a Turkish lawyer, writer and human rights activist. Biography Growing up in Maden, Fethiye Çetin had no reason to suspect that she had other than Turkish Muslim roots, until her maternal grandmother, Seher, revealed to her that her real name was not Seher: she was by birth an Armenian Christian, named Heranuş Gadaryan. Heranuş was born to parents Hovannes and Isguhi Gadaryan, and was taken from her mother's arms during a death march in the course of the Armenian genocide.
