Maureen Constance Guinness
Maureen Constance Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava (née Guinness; 31 January 1907 – 3 May 1998) was an Anglo-Irish socialite, known as one of the "Guinness Golden Girls". Early life and family Maureen Constance Guinness was born in Grosvenor Place, London on 31 January 1907. She was the second daughter of Ernest Guinness and Marie Clothilde Russell (1880–1953), daughter of Sir George Russell, 4th Baronet. Together with her elder sister Aileen and her younger sister Oonagh, the three Guinness sisters were known as the "Golden Guinness Girls". Guinness attended a finishing school in Paris, after which she debuted in society in 1925. She became known as the most extroverted, flamboyant, and most photographed of the three sisters. Basil Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 4th Marquess Of Dufferin And Ava
Basil Sheridan Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 4th Marquess of Dufferin and Ava (6 April 1909 – 25 March 1945), styled Earl of Ava from 1918 until 1930, was a Conservative politician and soldier of the United Kingdom. Early life Dufferin was the eldest child, and only son, of the 3rd Marquess of Dufferin and Ava and the former Brenda Woodhouse. Following his father's succession to the marquessate in 1918, he was known as the Earl of Ava. His grandfather, a descendant of the 18th-century playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, "was the cultured and worldly 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava", who served as the Viceroy and Governor-General of India. He was educated at Lockers Park School and Eton College, and then at Balliol College, Oxford. John Maude
John Cyril Maude KC (3 April 1901 – 16 August 1986) was a British barrister and Conservative Party politician. He sat in the House of Commons from 1945 to 1951, and then became a judge. Early life Maude was the son of the actors Cyril Maude and Winifred Emery. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, and was called to the bar in 1925 at the Middle Temple. Career He was the Recorder of Devizes from 1939 to 1944, and of Plymouth from 1944 to 1954. He became a King's Counsel in 1943, and a bencher in 1951. He was Counsel to the Post Office at the Central Criminal Court from 1935 to 1942, and junior counsel to the Treasury from 1942 to 1942. During the Second World War, he served as a temporary Civil Assistant at the War Office in 1939. In 1940 he joined the Military Intelligence Corps with the rank of Major, and worked in the offices of the War Cabinet in 1942. Guinness Brewery
St. James's Gate Brewery is a brewery founded in 1759 in Dublin, Ireland, by Arthur Guinness. The company is now a part of Diageo, a company formed from the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan in 1997. The main product of the brewery is Draught Guinness. Originally leased in 1759 to Arthur Guinness at £45 per year for 9,000 years, the St. James's Gate area has been the home of Guinness ever since. It became the largest brewery in Ireland in 1838, and the largest in the world by 1886, with an annual output of 1.2 million barrels. Although no longer the largest brewery in the world, it remains as the largest brewer of stout. The company has since bought out the originally leased property, and during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the brewery owned most of the buildings in the surrounding area, including many streets of housing for brewery employees, and offices associated with the brewery. The ''Daily Express'' is a national daily United Kingdom middle-market newspaper printed in tabloid format. Published in London, it is the flagship of Express Newspapers, owned by publisher Reach plc. It was first published as a broadsheet in 1900 by Sir Arthur Pearson. Sir Osbert Lancaster, CBE (4 August 1908 – 27 July 1986) was an English cartoonist, architectural historian, stage designer and author. He was known for his cartoons in the British press, and for his lifelong work to inform the general public about good buildings and architectural heritage. The only child of a prosperous family, Lancaster was educated at Charterhouse School and Lincoln College, Oxford; at both he was an undistinguished scholar. From an early age he was determined to be a professional artist and designer, and studied at leading art colleges in Oxford and London. While working as a contributor to ''Architectural Review, The Architectural Review'' in the mid-1930s, Lancaster published the first of a series of books on architecture, aiming to simultaneously amuse the general reader and demystify the subject.
