Mauchline F.C.
Mauchline Football Club was a senior football team based in the small town of Mauchline in East Ayrshire. History The club was founded in 1873. Its first match against another side was in February 1874, against Ayr Academy F.C., Ayr Academy. Mauchline was an original member of two ill-fated leagues who survived for just one season, The Ayrshire Football League for the 1891–92 season and the original South of Scotland Football League in 1892–93. However, Mauchline were better known as a cup team, appearing in every Scottish Cup from 1875–76 to 1885–86, and often reaching the later rounds. In 1877–78 they reached the quarter-finals only to lose 1–3 away to the eventual winners, Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Renton. In the same season, the club won the Ayrshire Cup for the only time, beating Kilmarnock Portland F.C., Portland 4–2 in the final, played at Holm Quarry, the home ground for a number of other Kilmarnock sides. Ayrshire Football League
Ayrshire Football League is a defunct soccer league in Scotland. Formed in 1891 by Annbank, Ayr Parkhouse, Beith, Galston, Irvine, Kilwinning Monkcastle, Mauchline, Newmilns, Saltcoats Victoria and Stevenston Thistle F.C. By 1893 the Ayrshire Football League had increased to 16 clubs. For some, this was too many and the likelihood of playing to small crowds was irksome. So 7 clubs broke away to form the Ayrshire Football Combination. 1888 Scottish Athletics Championships
The 1888 Scottish Athletics Championships were the sixth national athletics championships to be held in Scotland. They were held under the auspices of the Scottish Amateur Athletic Association at Powderhall Grounds, Edinburgh, on Saturday 23 June 1888. The meet was held in "splendid" weather, and the track was reported to be "in first rate order," but a slight easterly wind affected performances. Ernest Stones (Ulverston AC) set a Scottish All-comers record in defending his pole vault title. Three days after finishing second in the 4 miles at the championship Andrew Hannah set a Scottish All-comers record at the event running 21:02 2/5 at Ibrox Park, Glasgow. This was the first in a long list of almost three dozen records Hannah will set over the next seven years at all distances from 2 miles to 10 miles, becoming the dominant Scottish distance runner of the decade. Hugh Wilson (Scottish Footballer)
Hugh Wilson (5 August 1859 – 14 December 1946) was a Scottish international footballer who played for Dumbarton in the 1880s. He began his career at hometown club Mauchline and was playing for them in 1878 when they won the Ayrshire Cup, and represented the county in several of the regional challenge matches which were played in that era against the likes of Edinburgh and Birmingham. John Smith (footballer Born 1855)
John Smith (12 August 1855 – 16 November 1934) was a Scottish footballer of the 1870s and 1880s. He is also notable for playing rugby union and was a member of the first British Lions team that toured Australia and New Zealand in 1888. Football career Club career Smith began playing football at Mauchline F.C. before transferring to Edinburgh University while he studied. After completing his studies in the early 1880s he joined Queen's Park, where he won the Scottish Cup in 1881, 1882 and 1884. He became the first player to score a hat-trick in a Scottish Cup final when he scored all three of Queen's Park's goals in the 1881 final replay against Dumbarton. He was not selected to play in the 1882 final and no match took place in 1884 – Queen's Park were awarded the trophy after Vale of Leven failed to appear. The South of Scotland Football League (SoSFL) is a senior football league based in south-west Scotland. The league sits at level 6 on the Scottish football league system, acting as a feeder to the Lowland Football League.
