Matthias Eduard Schweizer
Matthias Eduard Schweizer (8 August 1818 – 23 October 1860) was a Swiss chemist who in 1857 invented Schweizer's reagent, in which cellulose can be dissolved to produce artificial silk or rayon. He was one of the pioneers of the synthetic textile industry. Life Matthias Eduard Schweizer was born on 8 August 1818 in Wila, Zurich canton. He was awarded his doctorate in at the University of Zurich, then worked as an assistant at the Zurich Polytechnic. He was a student and assistant of Carl Jacob Löwig, and was mainly involved in analysis of different minerals. He lectured at the university, and was an associate professor at the university from 1852. From 1855 he taught chemistry at the Higher Industrial School (''Oberen Industrieschule'') in Zurich. Schweizer published a paper in 1857 (''Das Kupferoxid-Ammoniak, ein Auflösungsmittel für die Pflanzenfaser'') in which he reported that cotton, linen cellulose and silk could be dissolved in a cuprammonium solution. Johann Urban
Johann Urban (or Johannes Urban, 7 June 1863 – 13 November 1940) was an Austrian chemist and industrialist. He was one of the pioneers of the artificial silk industry. Early years Johann Urban was born on 7 June 1863 in Wuchern (now Vuhred) near Marburg (Maribor) in Lower Styria, Austria. His father was a timber merchant. He studied mechanical and electrical engineering in Graz, and expected to work as a teacher at a state vocational school. Instead, he found work in a light bulb factory in Rotterdam, where he met Max Fremery. In the mid-1880s Urban and Fremery took over the technical management of a light bulb factory in Gelnhausen. Lamp manufacture (1885–1900) The Swiss chemist Matthias Eduard Schweizer (1818–60) had found in 1857 that cotton could be dissolved in a solution of copper salts and ammonia and then regenerated. Edmund Thiele
Edmund Oswald Thiele (1874–1971), later known as Sir Edmund Oswald Teale KBE (he changed the spelling of his surname in 1917) was a prominent geologist from Doncaster, Victoria, Australia. He was created a knight in 1936 during Colonial service in Tanganyika Territory. Career He began a Geological survey in the German colony of Tanganyika in 1908 but was obliged to return to Australia during the First World War. During this time he found employment as a temporary Lecturer in geology at the University of Adelaide, replacing Sir Douglas Mawson who had left for Britain to help the war effort. Between 1917 and 1918 Teale took up a research fellowship at the University of Melbourne. After the war Teale returned to East Africa as part of the geological survey until 1936. Rayon is a semi-synthetic fiber, made from natural sources of regenerated cellulose, such as wood and related agricultural products. It has the same molecular structure as cellulose. It is also called viscose. Many types and grades of viscose fibers and films exist. Some imitate the feel and texture of natural fibers such as silk, wool, cotton, and linen.
