Matthew Wiles
Air Vice-Marshal Matthew John Gethin Wiles, (born 1961) is a retired senior commander in the Royal Air Force who previously served as the Air Secretary. Wiles was commissioned into the Royal Air Force as a flying officer in 1979. He served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel and Logistics at Permanent Joint Headquarters and then went on to be Director General of the Joint Supply Chain at Defence Equipment and Support in 2008. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours before he became Air Secretary in September 2011. The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's air and space force. It was formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, becoming the first independent air force in the world, by regrouping the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) is a trading entity and joint-defence organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence. It began operating on 2 April 2007, following the merger of the MoD's Defence Procurement Agency and the Defence Logistics Organisation, under the Chief Executive Officer of Defence Equipment and Support. DE&S initially had a civilian and military workforce of around 29,000 (77 per cent civilian and 23 per cent military) in the UK and abroad. Air Vice Marshal David John Stubbs, is a senior Royal Air Force officer. He previously served as the Commandant of Royal Air Force College Cranwell from 2012 to 2013, and the Air Secretary from 2013 to 2016. Air Vice Marshal Michael Guy Lloyd, was a senior commander in the Royal Air Force who served as the Air Officer Commanding No. 22 Group from 2011 until 2014. Air vice-marshal (AVM) is a two-star air officer rank which originated in and continues to be used by the Royal Air Force. The rank is also used by the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence and it is sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure. Air vice-marshal is a two-star rank and has a NATO ranking code of OF-7. It is equivalent to a rear-admiral in the Royal Navy or a major-general in the British Army or the Royal Marines. In other NATO forces, such as the United States Armed Forces and the Canadian Armed Forces, the equivalent two-star rank is major general. The Air Secretary and Chief of Staff, Personnel is the Royal Air Force officer with responsibility for appointments, promotions, postings, and discipline of high ranking members of the British air force. From 1978 to 1983 the Air Secretary was more often referred to as " Air Officer Commanding Royal Air Force Personnel Management Centre".
