Matthew Seligman
Matthew Seligman (14 July 1955 – 17 April 2020) was an English bassist, best known for his association with the new wave music scene of the 1980s. Seligman was a member of the Soft Boys and the Thompson Twins, and was a sideman for Thomas Dolby. Seligman was also a member of Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club and the Dolphin Brothers, and backed David Bowie during his performance at Live Aid in 1985. Biography Early life Seligman was born in Cyprus, and his family moved to the UK eight months after his birth, settling in Wimbledon. Influenced by Paul McCartney, Free’s Andy Fraser, and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads, he learned bass. Career Seligman was a founding member of Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club, which also included his friend Thomas Dolby. ''In the Name of Love'' is the first Thompson Twins album released in the United States. The album was released in 1982 by Arista Records and comprises eight of the eleven tracks from their second album, '' Set'', plus two of the singles from their debut album, '' A Product of ... (Participation)'' (neither of these albums were released separately in the US at that time). The album was released on the strength of the single "In The Name of Love", which topped the dance music chart in '' Billboard'' magazine, reaching the number one position and staying there for five weeks between 22 May and 19 June 1982. ''Set'' is the second studio album by English pop band Thompson Twins. Released in February 1982, it was the second album they recorded for their own Tee Records, T Records imprint, which was released by Arista Records/Hansa. Compared to their first album, ''A Product Of... (Participation), A Product Of...'', ''Set'' featured a more polished sound, thanks to producer Steve Lillywhite. With their ever-shifting line-up, the Thompson Twins had now swelled to seven members, adding Matthew Seligman on bass guitar to free up Tom Bailey (musician, born 1956), Tom Bailey for full frontman duties and keyboards. Former sax player Jane Shorter was replaced by Alannah Currie, who was Bailey's girlfriend at the time (they later married and remained together until 2004). The Fallout Club
The Fallout Club was a British synth-pop and new wave band formed by Irish singer Trevor Herion, the experimental drummer Paul Simon, future successful Thomas Dolby on keyboards, and bassist Matthew Seligman in 1981. Herion and Simon formed the band shortly after the demise of their previous group, the Civilians, while Dolby was in Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club Seligman, who also had played in the Soft Boys. The band only released singles: "Falling Years"/"The Beat Boys", "Dream Soldiers", "Pedestrian Walkway", "Wonderlust"/"Desert Song" (Happy Birthday Records, 1981). ''Underwater Moonlight'' is the second studio album by English rock band the Soft Boys, released on 28 June 1980 by record label Armageddon. Initially unsuccessful, the album has gone on to be viewed as a psychedelic classic, influential on the development of the neo-psychedelia music genre and on a number of bands, especially R.E.M. It is included in Robert Dimery's ''1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die''. Recording The album was recorded between January and June 1980 at the Alaska and James Morgan studios in London, and during June 1979 at Spaceward Studios in Cambridge. The London sessions were produced by Pat Collier, while the Cambridge sessions were produced by Spaceward Studios staff. The recordings were done on 4- and 8-track, and only cost £600. Andy Metcalfe
Andy Metcalfe (born 3 March 1956, Bristol, England) is an English bassist, keyboardist and producer, who played mainly with The Soft Boys (with Robyn Hitchcock, 1976–1979), Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians (1984–1994), and with Squeeze off and on during the period 1985–1994. He co-produced several of the Egyptians albums (''Gotta Let This Hen Out!'', ''Element of Light'', '' Globe of Frogs'' and ''Queen Elvis''), contributing guitars, keyboards and string arrangements along with his melodic bass lines. Since the break-up of the Egyptians, his production credits include Glenn Tilbrook, The Autumns, Sugarplastic, Kimberley Rew, Plainsong, Julian Dawson, Clear, Jazz Passengers with Debbie Harry, Helen Roche; often playing bass and keyboards on the sessions. ZTT Records
ZTT Records is a British record label founded in 1983 by record producer Trevor Horn, Horn's wife and businesswoman Jill Sinclair, and ''New Musical Express'' (NME) journalist Paul Morley. The label's name was also stylised as ZANG TUMB TUUM and ZANG TUUM TUMB on various releases. In December 2017, Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired ZTT Records, along with Stiff Records. The ZTT and Stiff back catalogues were licensed to BMG Rights Management under Union Square Music until 2022, when Universal relaunched the label. History ZTT is an initialism of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's sound poem ''Zang Tumb Tumb'', which described 'zang tumb tumb' as the sound of a machine gun. The Buggles
The Buggles were an English new wave band formed in London in 1977 by singer and bassist Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes. They are best known for their 1979 debut single "Video Killed the Radio Star", which topped the UK Singles Chart and reached number one in 15 other countries and was chosen as the song to launch MTV in 1981. The duo released their first album, ''The Age of Plastic'', in January 1980 with "Video Killed the Radio Star" as its lead single. "Video Killed the Radio Star" is a song written by Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Woolley in 1979. It was recorded concurrently by Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club (with Thomas Dolby on keyboards) for their album '' English Garden'' and by British new wave/synth-pop group the Buggles, which consisted of Horn and Downes (and initially Woolley). The Buggles' version of the track was recorded and mixed in 1979, released as their debut single on 7 September 1979 by Island Records, and included on their first album ''The Age of Plastic''. ''English Garden'', released in North America as ''Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club'', is a studio album by Bruce Woolley and his new wave band the Camera Club. The band consisted of Woolley on vocals, Matthew Seligman on bass, Rod Johnson on drums, Dave Birch on guitar, and Thomas Dolby on keyboards. Before forming the group, Woolley was creating pop songs intended for publishing companies, but he was not happy with what the artists were doing with his songs and decided to write material for himself.
