Matthew McDermott
Matthew Charles McDermott (born November 22, 1977) is an American lawyer who has served an associate justice of the Iowa Supreme Court since 2020. In 2024, he wrote the majority ruling on the Iowa Supreme Court that implemented a six-week abortion ban. McDermott wrote that the abortion ban was "rationally related to the state’s legitimate interest in protecting unborn life." Education McDermott grew up in Carroll, Iowa and received a Bachelor of Arts with distinction and honors in economics and political science from the University of Iowa in 2000. He then attended the UC Berkeley School of Law, receiving a Juris Doctor in 2003. At Berkeley, he was executive editor of the California Law Review and taught in the political science department. The Iowa Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S. state of Iowa. The Court is composed of a Chief Justice and six Associate Justices. The Court holds its regular sessions in Des Moines in the Iowa Judicial Branch Building located at 1111 East Court Avenue on the state Capitol grounds, south of the Iowa State Capitol. History In 1846, Iowa became the 29th state to join the United States. Following the constitution of the Federal government, the powers of the government in Iowa were divided into the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the judicial branch. Dana Leanne Oxley (born December 21, 1967) is an associate justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. Education Oxley obtained a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa in 1990. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1998. In law school, she was articles editor of the Journal of Corporation Law, graduated third in her class, and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Legal and academic career Oxley joined the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Cedar Rapids law firm Shuttleworth & Ingersoll in 1999. She was then a career law clerk for Judge David R. Hansen of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit from 2001 to 2011. David Wiggins (born October 19, 1951) is a former Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. Education Wiggins was born in Chicago and graduated from Niles East High School. He was the first in his family to attend college and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1973. He then attended Drake University Law School While there, he was an associate editor of the ''Drake Law Review''. He graduated with honors and Order of the Coif in 1976.
