Matthew Gardiner, Trade Unionist
Matthew John Gardiner (born 16 May 1971) is an Australian former trade unionist. He was the Secretary of the Northern Territory Branch of United Voice and was also President of the Northern Territory Branch of the Australian Labor Party. In 2015 he went to Syria to fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. He was detained upon his return to Australia but released without charge. Career Gardiner served in the Australian Army for around a decade and was deployed to Somalia in 1993 as a combat engineer. In United Voice he oversaw the growth of the branch to become the largest union in the Northern Territory. The union in the Northern Territory represents workers with occupations in many varied industries in the Northern Territory including miners, firefighters, prison officers, childcare workers, healthcare workers, cleaners, security guards and workers at Indigenous organisations. People's Protection Units
The People's Defense Units (YPG), (YPG) ; ar, وحدات حماية الشعب, Waḥdāt Ḥimāyat aš-Šaʽb) also called People's Protection Units, is a mainly-Kurdish militia in Syria and the primary component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Stella Maris is a heritage site on McMinn Street in Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History The Stella Maris site is located on McMinn Street in Darwin and consists of three main buildings. The oldest building was constructed 1930s by the Commonwealth Railways. While the exact date of its construction is not known, a 1936 map of central Darwin shows two adjacent buildings marked as 'Commonwealth Railways'. The remaining building on site was one of these. The other is thought to have been demolished in the early 1940s. The building may be featured in a photograph dated 1936, entitled “an old railway house on the way to the wharf” although it has not been verified that it is the same building. The fact that the building was described as ‘old’ in 1936 suggests the possibility that it may have been built much earlier.
