Matthew E. Hawco
Matthew E. Hawco (1882 – May 18, 1962) was an engineer, magistrate and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Harbour Main in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1923 to 1924. He was born in Holyrood and was educated there and in Superior, Wisconsin. He apprenticed as an engineer at the shipbuilding plant in Superior, Wisconsin. In 1905, he received his certificate as Chief Engineer from the Wisconsin State examiners. Afterwards, he became chief of harbour construction on the Great Lakes. From 1913 to 1918, he worked for the Government of Canada on the Great Lakes. Hawco returned to Newfoundland in 1918, becoming a marine superintendent for the Newfoundland government. He was elected to the Newfoundland assembly in 1923 and was named Minister of Posts and Telegraphs in the cabinet. Dominion Of Newfoundland
Newfoundland was a British dominion in eastern North America, today the modern Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was established on 26 September 1907, and confirmed by the Balfour Declaration of 1926 and the Statute of Westminster of 1931. It included the island of Newfoundland, and Labrador on the continental mainland. Newfoundland was one of the original dominions within the meaning of the Balfour Declaration and accordingly enjoyed a constitutional status equivalent to the other dominions of the time. In 1934, Newfoundland became the only dominion to give up its self-governing status, which ended 79 years of self-government. The abolition of self-government came about because of a crisis in Newfoundland's public finances in 1932. Harbour Main, formerly Harbour Main-Whitbourne and Harbour Main-Bell Island, is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to 1975, the district elected two MHAs. Between 1972 and the year 2000, it was a Tory stronghold, apart from a two-term Liberal breakthrough in the 1990s. It includes the southern portion of the town of Conception Bay South and the town of Holyrood, the farthest extern of the St. John's Metropolitan Area. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Holyrood, Newfoundland And Labrador
Holyrood is a town on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is in Division 1, on Conception Bay. It is approximately a 30 minute drive from the capital city of St. John's. During King William's War, the village was destroyed in the Avalon Peninsula Campaign. The town is famous for being at the bottom of the bay and having a large cross on the top of the predominant mountain "George Cove."Holyrood is also renowned for its squid fishery and caplin "rolling" which happens in late spring, early summer. "Rolling" refers to the mating of the caplin when they beach themselves and can be picked up by hand. It also hosts the popular "Squid Fest," several days of squid themed activities culminating in an outdoor festival of drinking and traditional music. William Warren (politician)
William Robertson Warren (October 9, 1879 – December 31, 1927) was a Newfoundland lawyer, politician and judge who served as the dominion's Prime Minister from July 1923 to April 1924. Early life His parents were William Matthew Henry Warren, a surveyor, and Jessie Sophia Warren. He had at least one sibling, a sister, Alice Mary Warren (died 1930), who was married to Robert Brown Job, President of Job Brothers & Co., Limited. He received his education at Bishop Feild College, St. John's, Newfoundland and Framlingham College, in England. After studying law, Warren was admitted as a solicitor in 1901 Career Warren was first elected to the Newfoundland House of Assembly in 1903 as a Liberal and served as Speaker of the House from 1909-1913. Albert Hickman
Albert Edgar Hickman (August 2, 1875 – February 9, 1943) was the seventeenth Prime Minister of Newfoundland and has the distinction of having served the shortest term of any Prime Minister. Biography Albert Hickman was born in Grand Bank on August 2, 1875. He married Mary Louise Laurie on December 24, 1906, and they had three children. A politician and businessman, he served as Prime Minister of Newfoundland for 33 days in 1924 as leader of a caretaker administration after the successive collapses of the Liberal Reform Party governments of Prime Ministers Sir Richard Squires and William Warren.
