Matthew Cooke (entomologist)
Matthew Cooke (1829–1887) was an Irish immigrant to the United States who pioneered economic entomology in California. Born in Bushmills, County Antrim, on February 16, 1829, Matthew Cookie immigrated to the United States in 1850. Employed as a youth in the Public Works Department in Bushmills, he was promoted to Superintendent of Works. In California he first took up a post at the Water Works in Scaremento and in 1875 became a fruit box manufacturer. His business suffered badly when the Codling moth appeared in the state, devastating the apple crop. He studied entomology to solve the problem and by 1879 was able to address the State Fruit Growers on the Codling moth and other serious pests, including those of the important wine crop. In 1881 he was appointed Chief Executive Horticultural and Health Officer of California and drew up quarantine regulations relating to insects. Economic entomology is a field of entomology, which involves the study of insects that benefit or harm humans, domestic animals, and crops. Insects that cause losses are termed as pests. Some species can cause indirect damage by spreading diseases and these are termed as vectors. Those that are beneficial include those reared for food such as honey, substances such as lac or pigments and for their role in pollinating crops and controlling pests. Robert Patterson (Belfast)
Robert Patterson, Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (1802–1872) was an Irish businessman and natural history, naturalist born in Belfast, Ireland. Biography The eldest son of Robert Patterson (1750–1831), owner of a mill-furnishing business in Belfast established in 1786, Robert Patterson was born into a wealthy family. He was educated first at the Belfast Academy under the direction of a Dr. Bryce, and then at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Belfast Academical Institution. Here he won a prize for an essay on the natural history of Lough Neagh. When his father died in 1831, Patterson took over management of the family business, eventually marrying Mary Ferrar, one of whose ancestors had come to Ireland as a captain in Frederick Schomberg, 1st Duke of Schomberg, Schomburg's Horse regiment.
