Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl Of Lennox
Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox (21 September 1516 – 4 September 1571) was a leader of the Catholic nobility in Scotland. He was the paternal grandfather of King James VI of Scotland and I of England. He owned Temple Newsam in Yorkshire, England. Origins He was the son of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox (d.1526) by his wife Lady Elizabeth Stewart, a daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl. Conflict with Regent Arran (1543–1547) Matthew Stewart succeeded as Earl of Lennox on the death of his father in 1526. His mother sent him and his younger brother John Stewart to France into the care of their great uncle Robert Stewart, 5th Lord of Aubigny, who enrolled them in the Garde Écossaise. When King James V of Scotland died in 1542, Cardinal Beaton urged Lennox to return to Scotland to rival James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran. Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl Of Lennox
Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl of Lennox (14609 September 1513), was a prominent Scottish nobleman. Stewart was the son of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox, and Margaret Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie. He died fighting in the Battle of Flodden Field. He married firstly, on 13 June 1490, Margaret Lyle, daughter of Robert Lyle, 2nd Lord Lyle, Chief Justiciar of Scotland. On 9 April 1494, he married Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, and Mary Stewart, Princess of Scotland, daughter of King James II of Scotland. Stewart and Elizabeth Hamilton had six children: Mungo Stewart, Agnes Stewart, John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox, Margaret Stewart, Elizabeth Stewart, and Catherine Stewart. Matthew Stewart FRS FRSE (1717–1785) was a Scottish mathematician and minister of the Church of Scotland. Life He was born in the manse at Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, on 15 January 1717, the son of Rev Dugald Stewart, the local minister, and his wife, Janet Bannantyne. He was educated at Rothesay Grammar School, then entered the University of Glasgow in 1734, where he studied under the philosopher Francis Hutcheson and the mathematician Robert Simson, the latter from whom he studied ancient geometry. A close friendship developed between Simson and Stewart, in part because of their mutual admiration of Pappus of Alexandria, which resulted in many curious communications with respect to the De Locis Planis of Apollonius of Perga and the Porisms of Euclid over the years. Matthew Stuart (born 1966/1967) is an American philosopher and a professor of philosophy at Bowdoin College. His primary work is in the field of Early Modern Philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics and focuses on the philosophy of John Locke. He is the author of ''Locke’s Metaphysics'' (Oxford Clarendon Press, 2013) in which he takes a unique approach to John Locke's work "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" to view it as a strong Metaphysical text, rather than just that of epistemology. Matthew James Stewart (born 18 May 1973) is a former rugby union player, who gained 34 caps as a prop for Scotland (1996–2002). Early life Stewart was born on 18 May 1973 in Dartford, England. Rugby career Stewart’s first international appearance was against Italy national rugby union team, Italy at Murrayfield on 14 December 1996. Of note, his work also appeared in group exhibitions at the Museum of London (which acquired his work for its permanent collection), the Museum of the City of New York, France, Bangkok and Stockholm. Matthew Stewart (British Army Officer)
Colonel Matthew Stewart FRSE (1784–1851) was son of Dugald Stewart and a 19th-century Scottish army officer. Life He was born in 1784 the son of the famous philosopher Dugald Stewart and grandson of Matthew Stewart. His mother was Dugald Stewart's first wife, Helen Bannantyne. The family lived at Lothian House at the foot of the Canongate, near Holyrood Palace. In 1804 he joined the Royal Engineers. In 1807 he became Aide-de-camp to Sir Gilbert Elliot whilst the latter served as Governor-General of India. He was then promoted to Lt Colonel in 1824 and served in Portugal for some time. In 1837 he became Brevet Colonel to the 42nd Regiment ( Black Watch). In 1820 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were William Archibald Cadell, William Wallace, and James Jardine. He was also a member of The Speculative Society of Edinburgh. He died on 29 May 1851.
