Matthew Allen Hughes (born October 13, 1973) is an American retired mixed martial artist with a background in wrestling. Widely considered among the greatest fighters in the history of MMA, he is a former two-time UFC Welterweight Champion, UFC Hall of Fame inductee, and NJCAA Hall of Fame inductee. During his tenures in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Hughes put together two separate six-fight winning streaks, defeated all the available opposition in the welterweight division, and defended the belt a then-record seven times. In May 2010, Hughes became the eighth inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame. During his reign, Hughes was considered the #1 pound-for-pound mixed martial artist in the world. Matthew Hughes (born 1949) is a Canadian author who writes science fiction under the name Matthew Hughes, crime fiction as Matt Hughes and media tie-ins as Hugh Matthews. Prior to his work in fiction, he was a freelance speechwriter. Hughes has written over twenty novels and he is also a prolific author of short fiction whose work has appeared in ''The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction'', ''Asimov's Science Fiction'', ''Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine'', '' Lightspeed'', ''Postscripts'', '' Interzone'' and original anthologies edited by George R. Matthew Stephen Turner Hughes (born 17 April 1996) is an English cricketer. Playing for Oxford University, he scored a century in each of his first two first-class matches. He now teaches Chemistry at Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood, whilst still coaching cricket. Cricket career Matthew Hughes attended Stockport Grammar School before going up to Hertford College, Oxford. On his first-class debut, in the annual match against Cambridge University in 2015, he opened the batting for Oxford University and top-scored in each innings, making 41 and 116 in a losing cause. In his next first-class match, the 2016 university match, he made 116 (the top score) and 76 batting at number three, and Oxford won. Matthew Hughes (born 9 February 1950) is an Australian politician. He has been a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly since the 2017 state election, representing Kalamunda. Hughes was born in Audenshaw in the United Kingdom, and moved to Australia in 1979. He was a teacher and the principal of John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School, and also served on Swan City Council. He is the current Canadian record holder for men in the steeplechase, a record which he set at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. Hughes is a Nike sponsored training group based out of Portland, Oregon coached by Jerry Schumacher. Matthew Hughes VC (1822 – 9 January 1882) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Hughes was approximately 33 years old and a private in 7th Regiment of Foot (now The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers), British Army when, during the Crimean War, he performed the acts that saw him recommended for the VC.
