Matt B. Snyder
Matt B. Snyder (March 22, 1835 – January 17, 1917) was an American stage and silent screen actor and a Civil War veteran. Biography Snyder (also known as M.B. Snyder) is among the earliest born actors to appear in motion pictures and at his death the oldest actor in movies. Snyder was born when Andrew Jackson was President and died when Woodrow Wilson was President. During the Civil War Snyder served in the Union Navy and was a gunner on the USS Essex at Vicksburg. In the Victorian and Edwardian eras Snyder and his wife performed on the stage, sometimes on Broadway and much in touring companies as was the norm before motion pictures. In film he had an important role in the 1913 King Baggot ''Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde''. His last film was ''The Crisis'', a film by novelist Winston Churchill about the Civil War which he did not live to see released. Beatriz Michelena
Beatriz Michelena (February 22, 1890 – October 10, 1942) was a Venezuelan American actress and singer during the silent film era, known at the time for her operatic soprano voice and appearances in musical theatre. She was one of the few Latina stars visible on the silver screen in the United States in the 1910s. She was a leading lady in each film project she was involved in and, after the failure of California Motion Picture Company, co-founded a production company with her husband George E. Middleton, producing four of her own movies. She wrote popular articles for newspapers, including an advice column for girls, describing what it was like to be an actress, and answering questions from readers. Marshall Neilan
Marshall Ambrose "Mickey" Neilan (April 11, 1891 – October 27, 1958) was an American actor. Early life Born in San Bernardino, California, Neilan was known by most as "Mickey." Following the death of his father, the eleven-year-old Mickey Neilan had to give up on school to work at whatever he could find in order to help support his mother. As a teenager, he began acting in bit parts in theatre, live theatre, and in 1910 he got a job as chauffeur, driving Biograph Studios executives around Los Angeles to determine the suitability of the West Coast of the United States, West Coast as a place for a permanent studio. Winston Churchill (November 10, 1871 – March 12, 1947) was an American best-selling novelist of the early 20th century. He is nowadays overshadowed, even as a writer, by the more famous British statesman of the same name, to whom he was not related. Early life Churchill was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Edward Spalding Churchill by his marriage to Emma Bell Blaine. He attended Smith Academy in Missouri and the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1894. At the Naval Academy, he was conspicuous in scholarship and also in general student activities. He became an expert fencer and he organized at Annapolis the first eight-oared crew, which he captained for two years. After graduation he became an editor of the '' Army and Navy Journal''. He resigned from the U.S. Navy to pursue a writing career. ''Salomy Jane'' is a 1914 silent Western film based on Bret Harte's 1898 novella "Salomy Jane's Kiss" and Paul Armstrong's 1907 play based on Harte's story, ''Salomy Jane''. ''Salomy Jane'' was California Motion Picture Corporation's (CMPC) debut feature, as well as the screen debut of stage actress and singer Beatriz Michelena. George E. Middleton saw in his Latina wife a competitor to Mary Pickford as a premier screen star, and each CMPC production was intended to be a Michelena vehicle. Despite being well received by the public, it did not return a profit for the national distributor, Alco Films.
