Mati, Greece
Mati (Greek: Mάτι, meaning "eye") is a village in Greece. The village is located on the east coast of the Attica region, east of Athens, and it is a popular holiday resort. Overview Mati is a popular tourist destination with several hotels, restaurants, taverns, cafés, bars, night clubs, open air cinemas, sandy beaches and yacht marinas. The harbour at the nearby town of Rafina serves as an access point to the Aegean Sea and it is frequently used by tourists to reach many of Greece's numerous islands. The Penteli mountains, which are covered with forests, lie to the west and northwest. Beaches cover the eastern part and restaurants, hotels, and taverns line the shore. 2018 wildfire Mati was severely hit by a wildfire on 23 July 2018, which killed 103 people and injured 164. Attica (region)
Attica ( el, Περιφέρεια Αττικής, translit=Periféria Attikís, ) is an administrative region of Greece, that encompasses the entire metropolitan area of Athens, the country's capital and largest city. The region is coextensive with the former Attica Prefecture of Central Greece. It covers a greater area than the historical region of Attica. Overview Located on the eastern edge of Central Greece, Attica covers about 3,808 square kilometers. In addition to Athens, it contains within its area the cities of Elefsina, Megara, Laurium, and Marathon, as well as a small part of the Peloponnese peninsula and the islands of Salamis, Aegina, Angistri, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Kythira, and Antikythera. 2018 Attica Wildfires
A series of wildfires in Greece, during the 2018 European heat wave, began in the coastal areas of Attica in July 2018. 104 people were confirmed dead from the Mati fires (the last died in October 2022, from health problems which was caused because of the fire). The fires were the second-deadliest wildfire event in the 21st century, after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Australia that killed 173. Over 700 residents were evacuated or rescued, mainly from the seaside settlements located north of the port town of Rafina, namely Kokkino Limanaki and Mati, where rescuers found 26 corpses trapped just metres away from the sea, apparently hugging each other as they died. Boats also recovered corpses from the water, and rescued hundreds of people from beaches and the sea. Two heroic people drowned when the boat rescuing them from a hotel in Mati capsized. Pikermi
Pikermi ( el, Πικέρμι) is a suburb of Athens and a former community of East Attica regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Rafina-Pikermi, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 21.522 km2. Geography Pikermi is situated at the northern edge of the Mesogaia plain, south of the Penteliko Mountain. It is 5 km east of Pallini, 6 km west of Rafina and 19 km east of Athens city centre. Greek National Road 54 (Athens - Rafina) passes through Pikermi. The municipal unit Pikermi consists of the settlements Pikermi, Drafi and Dioni. Paleontology Pikermi features a paleontological site which has more than forty mammal species from the late Miocene (8 million years ago). Penteli ( el, Πεντέλη) is a village and a municipality in the North Athens regional unit, Attica, Greece. It belongs to the Athens rural area. It takes its name from Mount Pentelicus. Rafina ( el, Ραφήνα) is a suburban port town located on the eastern coast of Attica in Greece. It has a population of 13,091 inhabitants (2011 census). Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Rafina-Pikermi, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 18.979 km2. It is part of Athens metropolitan area. Geography Rafina lies on the Aegean Sea coast, east of the Penteli mountains and northeast of the Mesogaia plain. It is north of Artemida, Attica, Artemida, south of Nea Makri and east of Athens city centre.
