Alfred Augustus Mathews
Alfred Augustus Mathews (7 February 1864 – 12 August 1946) was a Welsh priest who was notable as a rugby union player in his youth; representing Lampeter at club level and playing a single international match for Wales. Biography Mathews was born on 7 February 1864. He was educated at Llandovery College before matriculating to St David's College, Lampeter. A clergyman by profession, after ordination he was curate, and then vicar of Holy Trinity, Swansea from 1887 to 1897. He became vicar of Blaenavon in 1897 and remained in Monmouthsire until his death. He married Ethel Frances, and they had five children, the youngest, Barbara Muriel Mathews was to become Barbara Brooke, Baroness Brooke of Ystradfellte, a British life peer. Gregory Macalister Mathews Order of the British Empire, CBE FRSE FZS FLS (10 September 1876 – 27 March 1949) was an Australian-born amateur ornithologist who spent most of his later life in England. Life He was born in Biamble, New South Wales, Biamble in New South Wales the son of Robert H. Mathews. He was educated at The King's School, Parramatta. Mathews made his fortune in mining shares, and moved to England in 1902. In 1910 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Lloyd Mathews
Sir Lloyd William Mathews, (7 March 1850 – 11 October 1901) was a British naval officer, politician and abolitionist. Mathews joined the Royal Navy as a cadet at the age of 13 and progressed through the ranks to lieutenant. He was involved with the Third Anglo-Ashanti War of 1873–4, afterwards being stationed in East Africa for the suppression of the slave trade. In 1877 he was seconded from the navy to Sultan Barghash of Zanzibar in order to form a European-style army; he would remain in the employment of the government of Zanzibar for the rest of his life. His army quickly reached 6,300 men and was used in several expeditions to suppress the slave trade and rebellions against the Zanzibar government. Mathews retired from the Royal Navy in 1881 and was appointed Brigadier-General of Zanzibar. Larry Mathews is a musician from Glenbeigh in the Irish County Kerry. He sings and plays Irish Folk, his own compositions as well as Rock and Pop. Kevin Mathews (born 15 February 1961) is a Singaporean singer-songwriter and film music composer. Watchmen Mathews formed The Watchmen in 1989 with his Anglo Chinese School classmates Tony and James Makarome. Originally a five-man band called The Hornets, The Watchmen put out three independent releases in the early 1990s, ''Who Watches the Watchmen'', ''Industry & Commerce'' and the acclaimed ''This Savage Garden''. This garnered the trio an invitation from ''BigO'' magazine to contribute to their ''New School Rock III'' CD in 1993. Jon Mathews (1932–1979) was a physicist, yachtsman, scholar, and adventurer. After a 23-year career as a physics professor, he was lost at sea and presumed drowned during a circumnavigation attempt with his wife Jean in 1979. Early life and education Mathews was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of John H. “Jack” Mathews, an attorney, and Grace Logie Mathews, a schoolteacher. His paternal grandfather was Los Angeles city attorney W.B. Mathews.
