Matheson Station
Matheson station is located in the township of Black River-Matheson in Ontario, Canada. History An original station was built on the line circa 1908 by the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway; it was destroyed in the Matheson Fire in 1916. The present brick structure was built in its place in 1916. It still remains in place (as of 2020), well-maintained, unused and in good condition. The building contains a cornerstone indicating it was placed in 1916 by William Howard Hearst as Premier of Ontario, T.&N.O Railway Chairman Jacob Lewis Englehart, Denis Murphy and George Wise. Ontario Northland Railway
The Ontario Northland Railway is a Canadian railway operated by the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, a provincial Crown agency of the government of Ontario. Originally built to develop the Lake Timiskaming and Lake Nipissing areas, the railway soon became a major factor in the economic growth of the province. After decades of difficult construction through the Canadian Shield, workers reached James Bay in 1932. While blasting the route through the shield, geologists discovered deposits of valuable minerals such as gold, silver, copper and nickel. The railway also made it possible to exploit the timber resources of Northern Ontario. Iroquois Falls, Ontario
Iroquois Falls is a town in Northern Ontario, Canada, with a population of 4,537 at the 2016 census. The town centre lies 11 km east of Hwy 11 on the banks of the Abitibi River, west of Lake Abitibi. Timmins, one of the largest cities in northern Ontario, is approximately to the southwest. The following communities are also within the municipal boundaries: Monteith, Nellie Lake, and Porquis Junction. Timmins ( ) is a city in northeastern Ontario, Canada, located on the Mattagami River. The city is the fourth-largest city in the Northeastern Ontario region with a population of 41,145 (2021). Northlander
The ''Northlander'' was a passenger train operated by the Ontario Northland Railway in Ontario, Canada. The ''Northlander'' operated six days per week year-round in both directions and connected Cochrane with Toronto. The train typically consisted of one engine, an auxiliary power unit, two coaches and a cafeteria lounge car. It ran on ONR tracks from Cochrane to North Bay and on CN tracks south of North Bay to Toronto. In March 2012, the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission announced plans to discontinue the ''Northlander'' and replace it with bus service (Routes 1 and 2). William Howard Hearst
Sir William Howard Hearst, (February 15, 1864 – September 29, 1941) was the seventh premier of Ontario from 1914 to 1919. Hearst was born in Bruce County, Ontario. He practiced law in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario before being voted to provincial parliament as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. After six years representing Sault Ste. Marie in provincial government, Hearst became Premier of Ontario following the death of Premier James P. Whitney in 1914.
