Edward Peter Mathers
Edward Peter Mathers (19 August 1850, Edinburgh – 13 October 1924, Kensington) was a British author, editor, and newspaper proprietor. Edward P. Mathers was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh and at the Edinburgh Institution for Languages and Mathematics. He was a journalist in England until 1878 when he emigrated from England to the British colony of South Africa. There he worked for various newspapers and became the founder-editor of the ''Natal Advertiser'', a newspaper which was published until 1937. The ''Natal Advertiser'' publicized the prospects for wealth from gold mining and fully supported British imperialism. Mathers also wrote guides and handbooks for British migrants. In the 1880s he travelled throughout the Transvaal gold fields, wrote about them, and became the first journalist to foretell their great future prospects. Edward Powys Mathers
Edward Powys Mathers (28 August 1892 – 3 February 1939) was an English translator and poet, and also a pioneer of compiling advanced cryptic crosswords. Powys Mathers was born in Forest Hill, London, the son of Edward Peter Mathers, newspaper proprietor. He was educated at Loretto School and Trinity College, Oxford. He translated J. C. Mardrus's French version of ''One Thousand Nights and One Night''. His English version of Mardrus appeared in 1923, and is known as Mardrus/Mathers. He also translated ''The Garden of Bright Waters: One Hundred and Twenty Asiatic Love Poems'' (1920); and the Kashmiri poet Bilhana in ''Bilhana: Black Marigolds'' (1919), a free interpretation in the tradition of Edward FitzGerald, quoted at length in John Steinbeck’s novel ''Cannery Row''. George Mathers, 1st Baron Mathers KT, PC, DL (28 February 1886 – 26 September 1965) was a Scottish trade unionist and Labour Party politician. He served as Comptroller of the Household from 1944 to 1945 in Winston Churchill's war-time coalition government and as Treasurer of the Household (Deputy Chief Whip) from 1945 to 1946 in Clement Attlee's post-war Labour administration. Ellen Buckingham Mathews
Ellen Buckingham Mathews (1849–1920) was a popular female English novelist during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She was also known as Mrs Reeves after her marriage in 1877 to Dr. Henry Albert Reeves (1841–1914) but was best known under her pen name, Helen Mathers. She was born in Misterton, Somerset. Her first novel, "Comin' thro' the Rye" was published in 1875. It was partly based on people in her life and on her own early romantic experiences. She also acknowledged Rhoda Broughton as an early influence. She continued to write until her death. She was educated at a boarding school in Chantry near Frome in Somerset. In her first novel, "Comin' thro' the Rye" she describes some of her experiences at school. "Mr Russell" in the novel was the Rev. Frank Sydney Mathers (March 29, 1924 – February 9, 2005) was a professional ice hockey player during the 1940s and 1950s. He competed with the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs and the American Hockey League's Pittsburgh Hornets and Hershey Bears. He is best known for his 35-year association with the Bears as a player, coach, GM and President and was elected as a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the builder's category in 1992. Moina Mathers, born Mina Bergson (28 February 1865 – 25 July 1928), was an artist and occultist at the turn of the 20th century. Samuel Liddell (or Liddel) MacGregor Mathers (8 or 11 January 1854 – 5 or 20 November 1918), born Samuel Liddell Mathers, was a British occultist. He is primarily known as one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a ceremonial magic order of which offshoots still exist. Paul Mathers (born 17 January 1970) is a Scottish professional footballer and coach. He is currently the goalkeeping coach at Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone, appointed in August 2015. Career Between 1986 and 1996, Mathers made 132 appearances for Dundee, before moving to Falkirk, where he played 91 times in three years. In 1999 , he moved to Linfield, making 63 appearances until a transfer back to Dundee in 2001.
