Mather Byles Almon
Mather Byles Almon (1796 – 30 July 1871) was a Canadian banker, politician, and philanthropist. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Almon was a founder of the Bank of Nova Scotia. He was president of the bank from 1837 to 1870. He also helped with the administration of Halifax and Nova Scotia, and was appointed to the legislative and executive councils of the province. Originally aligned with Tory politicians, he left the party to join the Anti-Confederation Party in 1864. Early life, family, and early career Almon was born in Halifax in 1796. His father was William James Almon and his mother was Rebecca Byles; both were members of loyalist families. There is no record of Almon's early education. In the 1820s, Almon established a general and wholesale firm in Halifax. He was also an insurance agent for the Halifax Fire Insurance Company and the Halifax Marine Insurance Association, the latter of which he helped to establish in 1838. Mather Brown
Mather Brown (baptized October 11, 1761 – May 25, 1831) was an American painter who was born in Boston, Massachusetts and was active in England. Early life Brown was the son of Gawen and Elizabeth (Byles) Brown, and descended from the Rev. Increase Mather on his mother's side. He was taught by his aunt and around 1773 (age 12) became a pupil of Gilbert Stuart. He arrived in London in 1781 to further his training in Benjamin West's studio, entered the Royal Academy schools in 1782 with plans to be a miniature painter, and began to exhibit a year later. Painting career In 1784, he painted two religious paintings for the church of St. Mary’s-in-the-Strand, which led Brown to found a partnership with the painter Daniel Orme for the commercialization of these and other works through exhibition and the sale of engravings. Mather Byles
Mather Byles (born 26 March 1706, Boston, Massachusetts – 5 July 1788), was an American clergyman active in British North America. Byles was descended, on his mother's side, from John Cotton and Richard Mather and was a grandson of Increase Mather and nephew of Cotton Mather. As a young man, he corresponded with Alexander Pope and Isaac Watts. Byles graduated at Harvard University in 1725, received his A.M. degree there in 1728 and in 1733 he became pastor of the Hollis Street Church (Congregational), Boston. In 1765 he received a degree of Doctor of Divinity from the University of Aberdeen Scotland Byles held a high rank among the clergy of the province and was noted for his scholarly and well-written sermons, as well as his ready wit. Mather Byles (loyalist)
Mather Byles II (12 January 1734/1735 – 12 March 1814), was a Congregational clergyman at New London, Connecticut Colony until 1768. In 1768 he entered the Established Church, and became rector of Christ Church, Boston. Sympathizing with the royal cause, he settled, after the War of Independence in Halifax, Nova Scotia as Chaplain to the Garrison and later in Saint John, New Brunswick, where he was rector of a church until his death. The son of Mather Byles (1706–1788), he graduated from Harvard College in 1751 at the age of twelve, and later received his MA from the school.
